The social media platform <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tmz.com\/2022\/05\/12\/snapchat-new-crying-face-filter-not-inspired-by-amber-heard\/\">cleared the air in a statement<\/a> to TMZ. <\/p>\n<p>For the digitally uninitiated, the filter is essentially an augmented reality lens that you superimpose over people\u2019s faces, turning them into a blubbering mess like a virtual Greek tragedy mask. The feature amassed over 1.3 billion SnapChat impressions since it premiered last week as social media users throw crying faces over videos across the web.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, rumors began swirling that the feature was inspired by Amber Heard\u2019s tearful testimony during her ongoing defamation suit against Johnny Depp. The \u201cAquaman\u201d actress had broken down in court last week, prompting diehard Depp supporters to accuse her of \u201cfake crying\u201d and being a \u201cbad actress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Amber Heard filter is going hard, and they are killing me,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/abi_nayo\/status\/1523990954386104322\">wrote one gullible gawker on Twitter<\/a> of the alleged digital facsimile. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Shouse34\/status\/1523755121460785152\">Another mused, <\/a>\u201cNew <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/AmberHeard?src=hashtag_click\">#AmberHeard<\/a> Snapchat filter just dropped. Am ded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One social media<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@nadiak1998\/video\/7096245404014038274\"> rumor merchant even posted a TikTok video j<\/a>uxtaposing the filter with Heard\u2019s now-infamous \u201ccrying face.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-tiktok wp-block-embed-tiktok\"\/>\n<p>Snapchat PR reps have since dismissed the rumors, insisting that lens is not based on the \u201cJustice League\u201d star, TMZ reported. Not to mention that the company had begun developing the filter six months ago, well before Heard sobbed on the stand.
