air conditioners for the hot summer months are going to get burned with higher electricity costs \u2014 a\u00a0projected 12 percent hike over last summer\u2019s monthly bills, utility officials warned Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The summer sticker shock comes on top of the big hikes\u00a0in utility bill\u00a0costs over the winter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew York, like every other state, continues to experience higher than normal commodity prices compared to where prices were several years ago, and that is expected to continue throughout the coming summer,\u201d said Public Service Commission Chairman Rory Christian.<\/p>\n<p>A Con Edison representative said the increase for its customers in New York City and Westchester could\u00a0be \u201cin the range\u201d of 11 to 12 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The average monthly Con Ed bill for a typical residential customer from June\u00a0through September last summer was $104.05, said Con Ed spokesman Allan Drury.<\/p>\n<p>The energy supply, delivery costs and taxes each\u00a0account for about one-third of each customer\u2019s electrical bill.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" the PSC both assured the public there will be enough power to meet peak summer demand to avoid brownouts or blackouts.<\/p>\n<p>The PSC said a more robust post-pandemic economy and \u201cinternational uncertainty\u201d regarding energy supplies are contributing factors to the price hikes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe electric supply price increase can broadly be attributed to the global increase in natural gas prices,\u201d the PSC said following a commissioner\u2019s board meeting Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOverall, the statewide average residential full-service commodity rate is expected to be about 12 percent higher than last summer, but may vary depending on the customer\u2019s location in the state,\u201d the PSC said.<\/p>\n<p>The energy supply costs are the highest since 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Long term, the PSC claimed the state\u2019s green\u00a0new deal \u2014 the\u00a0 Climate Leadership and Community Protection law \u2014 will increase the use of renewable energy and reduce demand on fossil fuels and lessen price volatility.<\/p>\n<p>In a related\u00a0action, the PSC changed the way Con Edison calculates the cost of supplying electricity to customers to help prevent the sticker shock that ratepayers saw last winter.<\/p>\n<p>Gov.
