Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le, according to data compiled for The Post.<\/p>\n<p>The information was collected from publicly available filings of congressional staffers on LegiStorm \u2014 an online repository of data about congressional staffers and their compensation. <\/p>\n<p>The analysis reviewed approximately 600 former paid Schumer staffers over the last 20 years and cross-referenced their employment history with other publicly available information \u2013 including lobbying registration, LinkedIn profiles and company websites \u2013 to determine their Big Tech ties.<\/p>\n<p>The data comes as the Senate Judiciary Committee voted in January to move The U.S. Internet Innovation and Choice Act and the Open Marketplace Apps Act forward \u2014 but await Schumer\u2019s green light for a full Senate vote. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/schumer-aids-tech-07.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Chuck schumer\" class=\"wp-image-22245404\" width=\"618\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/schumer-aids-tech-07.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1233 1236w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/schumer-aids-tech-07.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=925 927w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/schumer-aids-tech-07.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=618 618w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/schumer-aids-tech-07.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=308 309w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/schumer-aids-tech-07.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\"\/><figcaption>More than 80 Schumer paid staffers have gone on to work in Big Tech roles.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Los Angeles Times via Getty Imag<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cSchumer doesn\u2019t want to bring the bills to the floor,\u201d Matt Stoller, an antitrust expert and Director of Research at the American Economic Liberties Project, told The Post. \u201cIf he brings them to the floor they\u2019ll pass \u2013 if you want to kill this legislation without being overt you\u2019d just stop it from being put up for a vote.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Post was first to report that both of Schumer\u2019s daughters are on the payroll of companies Schumer is supposed to be regulating. And the bevy of staffers who have worked alongside Schumer during his many years in Congress only add to the perceived conflict of interest Schumer has when it comes to cracking down on Big Tech.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica\u00a0Schumer is a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/webapps.jcope.ny.gov\/public\/ViewFiling\/BIMO\/MjQ3NTg10\">registered lobbyist<\/a>\u00a0at Amazon, according to New York state records. Alison\u00a0Schumer works at Facebook as a product marketing manager.<\/p>\n<p>Schumer\u2019s office provided a list to The Post of various actions the senator has taken to protect consumers. They also note one anti-Big Tech FTC Commissioner, Becca Kelly Slaughter, is a former Schumer staffer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf The Post wants to run a story about some \u2018list\u2019 related to Senator Schumer and tech, start with the one I provided detailing endless consumer wins, tough antitrust policies and legislative actions that defy, disprove and dropkick any notion of \u2018outside influence,&#8217;\u201d  Schumer spokesman Angelo Roefaro said.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate Majority Leader has also been juggling a busy legislative calendar: confirming Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court, getting funding to Ukraine, and most recently an effort to codify abortion rights<\/p>\n<p>And Schumer just made good on his promise to get anti-tech progressive Alvaro Bedoya confirmed as the fifth commissioner on the Federal Trade Commission \u2014 giving Chairman Lina Khan the majority she needs to reign in tech companies. <\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the senator said the FTC can begin \u201ccracking down on bad actor companies\u2026 using anticompetitive practices.\u201d <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/schumer-aids-tech-03.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"jeff bezos\" class=\"wp-image-22245431\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/schumer-aids-tech-03.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/schumer-aids-tech-03.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/schumer-aids-tech-03.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Former Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos testified about Amazon in front of Congress.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But others suggest that Schumer may be stalling on bringing the bills to the floor as the midterm elections loom and he doesn\u2019t want to ruffle the feathers of his Big Tech benefactors \u2013 some of which have come under fire for repressing free speech and operating as a monopoly. <\/p>\n<p>While Google employees and the company\u2019s PAC have donated approximately $200,000 to Schumer this election cycle according to public filings, a vast majority of donations to Schumer come from <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/schumer-aligned-dark-money-group-hauls-in-record-92-million-from-hidden-donors\">dark money <\/a>\u2014 which makes it hard to trace donors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSchumer is the only person standing in the way of bipartisan legislation regulating Google, Apple, and Amazon,\u201d a former Senate staffer told The Post. \u201cGiven the staffers who work in Big Tech and money he\u2019s raised from Big Tech there are deep concerns as to why he won\u2019t move these bills forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Internet Innovation and Choice Act \u2014 or so-called \u201cnon-discrimination bill\u201d \u2014 would stop platforms from \u201cself-preferencing\u201d their content. These former aides also have outsized impact on policy now that Schumer is the most powerful man in the Senate, they added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s definitely a concentration,\u201d Jeff Hauser, founder and director of the\u00a0Revolving Door Project says of the magnitude of staffers going to big tech jobs. <\/p>\n<p>Hauser suggests David Hantman \u2014 Schumer\u2019s former chief of staff who took a top job at Yahoo and Airbnb before opening his own tech lobbying firm, and whose wife was Google\u2019s first in-house lobbyist \u2013 may have \u201cserved as a gravitational pull\u201d when it came to staffers pursuing tech jobs.<\/p>\n<p>According to sources, Schumer considered nominating Hantman for a commissioner role at the Federal Trade Commission but pulled the plug amid worries he\u2019d receive too much backlash.<\/p>\n<p>Schumer has other notable alums with deep ties to big tech.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/schumer-big-tech-320.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Chuck schumer's daughters \" class=\"wp-image-22205078\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/schumer-big-tech-320.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/schumer-big-tech-320.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/schumer-big-tech-320.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Both Schumer\u2019s daughters are on the Big Tech payroll.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Senator Chuck Schumer\/Facebook<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Stefanie Martz was Schumer\u2019s chief counsel for five years before taking a job as lobbyist at Monument Policy Group where she\u2019s lobbied for Amazon and Google.<\/p>\n<p>Marisa Hawley, who worked with Schumer from 2019 to 2021, is now a lobbyist with the Information <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Technology<\/a> Industry Council, which works on behalf of clients including Google and Amazon.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Kidera worked as an aide from 2006 to 2008 before becoming a lobbyist. He lobbied on behalf of Meta from 2018 to 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Hauser explains that staffers who take jobs lobbying for tech don\u2019t really leave the nest. In fact they come back to feed the little legislative birdies with information that inform Schumer\u2019s policy. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Congressional staff being shriveled, junior staffers are reliant on corporate lobbyists for research,\u201d Hauser notes. \u201cIt\u2019s hard to be skeptical of claims when they\u2019re coming from friends and past colleagues.\u201d <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Hauser adds that most staffers rely heavily on alumni networks for information about issues in their current roles \u2014 and also for help getting a job when they leave Capitol Hill. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Hill networks are very powerful and people look out for each others \u2026 the fact a lot of people becomes lobbyists creates downsides,\u201d Hauser adds.<\/p>\n<p>To be sure, many of Schumer\u2019s closest aides have stayed with him for decades. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are people who have stuck by his side for years \u2014 and it\u2019s his inner circle who are on speed dial. Those relationships only come after decades,\u201d a source told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>As recently as 2018, Schumer has said he was \u201csympathetic\u201d and had been \u201cpretty kind\u201d to tech companies. Schumer has also called Facebook a \u201cvery positive force\u201d and an \u201cantidote\u201d to the far right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think [Schumer\u2019s staff] might be underestimating how bad the optics are around his conflicts of interest if he does not put the antitrust bills up for a vote,\u201d a former Schumer aide told The Post.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
