computer stores low-level settings like the system time and hardware settings in its CMOS. These settings are configured in the BIOS or UEFI setup menu. If you\u2019re experiencing a hardware compatibility issue or another problem, you may want to try clearing the CMOS.<\/p>\n<p>Clearing the CMOS resets your BIOS or UEFI settings back to their factory default state. In most cases, you can clear the CMOS from within the BIOS menu or by pressing the CMOS button on the back. In some cases, you may have to open your computer\u2019s case.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Use_the_BIOS_or_UEFI_Menu\"><\/span>Use the BIOS or UEFI Menu<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The easiest way to clear the CMOS is from your computer\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/56958\/htg-explains-how-uefi-will-replace-the-bios\/\">BIOS or UEFI setup menu. To access the setup menu, restart your computer and press the key that appears on your screen \u2014 often Delete or F2 \u2014 to access the setup menu.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>What Is UEFI, and How Is It Different from BIOS?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t see a key displayed on your screen, consult your computer\u2019s manual. Different computers use different keys. It may be named \u201cReset to default,\u201d \u201cLoad factory defaults,\u201d \u201cClear BIOS settings,\u201d \u201cLoad setup defaults,\u201d or something similar.<\/p>\n<p>Select it with your arrow keys, press Enter, and confirm the operation. The manual that came with your computer or motherboard will tell you specifically where to find it.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_note\"><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Do not confuse the CMOS clear button with a BIOS button. BIOS buttons allow you to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/136881\/htg-explains-do-you-need-to-update-your-computers-bios\/\">flash the BIOS without a CPU installed on the motherboard, revert to a previous version of the BIOS if a BIOS update went amiss, or both.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Once you locate the CMOS clear button, push it down for about 10 seconds. This is particularly useful if the BIOS is password-protected and you don\u2019t know the password, or if you\u2019ve made changes that prevent you from accessing the BIOS normally.<\/p>\n<p>The exact location of the jumper can be found in the motherboard\u2019s (or computer\u2019s) manual. You should consult the manual for more detailed instructions if you want to use the motherboard jumper.<\/p>\n<p>However, the basic process is fairly similar on all computers. Flip the computer\u2019s power switch to the off position to ensure it\u2019s not receiving any power. Open the computer\u2019s case and locate the jumper named something like CLEAR CMOS, CLEAR, CLR CMOS, PASSWORD, or CLR PWD \u2014 it will often be near the CMOS battery mentioned below.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_tip\"><p><strong>Tip:<\/strong> The CMOS clear jumper almost always has three pins.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/169994\/how-to-protect-your-pcs-hardware-from-static-electricity-when-working-on-it\/\">Ensure you\u2019re grounded so you don\u2019t damage your motherboard with static electricity before touching it. The CMOS battery provides power used to save the BIOS settings \u2014 this is how your computer knows how much time has passed even when it\u2019s been powered off for a while \u2014 so removing the battery will remove the source of power and clear the settings.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_note\"><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Not all motherboards have removable CMOS batteries. If the battery won\u2019t come loose, don\u2019t force it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>First, ensure the computer is powered off and you\u2019re grounded so you won\u2019t damage the motherboard with static electricity. Locate the round, flat, silver battery on the motherboard and carefully remove it.
