In response, many cities are trying to reduce the use of cars (particularly ICEs) within inner urban areas in favor of pedestrians, cyclists, and mass transit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But does such an <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach actually make a real difference to air pollution levels? Let\u2019s take a look:<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Whats_the_problem_with_cars\"><\/span><strong>What\u2019s the problem with cars?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You probably know the stats, but let\u2019s take just a quick refresher.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0013935121000487\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to joint research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Harvard University and various UK universities, more than 8 million people died in 2018 from fossil fuel pollution.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, the researchers estimated that exposure to particles from fossil fuel emissions accounted for 18% of total global deaths in 2018 \u2014 a little less than one out of five.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not all emissions are from cars though. Industrial manufacturing, oil refineries, natural events like weather, dust storms, bush fires, and agricultural activity all contribute to pollution levels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But 2020 research revealed that <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1185535\/transport-carbon-dioxide-emissions-breakdown\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">41% of global transportation emissions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are from ICE (gas) cars. The older the car, the worse the pollution.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But things aren\u2019t quite that simple.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"EVs_arent_blameless\"><\/span><strong>EVs aren\u2019t blameless<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not just exhaust fumes from ICEs that are to blame. In fact, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/uk-air.defra.gov.uk\/assets\/documents\/reports\/cat09\/1907101151_20190709_Non_Exhaust_Emissions_typeset_Final.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">55% of roadside traffic pollution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> comes from non-exhaust particles from both kinds of cars. Again, while EVs are far better, they are still a problem in high concentration.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another approach is to make driving less appealing by limiting parking. In 2016, Oslo removed parking from much of the city, including the center. The Urban Environment Agency shows it got rid of <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsy-today.com\/oslo-city-council-has-removed-almost-5000-parking-spaces\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4,775 parking spaces<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, replacing most with bicycle lanes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some cities, such as Paris, ban cars on particular days of the week or only on high pollution days.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ok_that_all_sounds_pretty_good_%E2%80%94_whats_the_problem\"><\/span><strong>Ok, that all sounds pretty good \u2014 what\u2019s the problem?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The issue is displacement. Unless there\u2019s the appropriate transport infrastructure, by moving cars out of cities we\u2019re simply transferring the problem somewhere else.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a few good examples in the UK.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Living_on_the_perimeter_of_low_emissions\"><\/span><strong>Living on the perimeter of low emissions<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2020, a coroner <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2020\/dec\/16\/girls-death-contributed-to-by-air-pollution-coroner-rules-in-landmark-case\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">made UK legal history<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by ruling in a coronial inquest that air pollution was a cause of the death of nine-year-old Ella Kissi-Debrah.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specifically, her death in February 2013 was caused by acute respiratory failure, severe asthma, and air pollution exposure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prof Stephen Holgate, an immunopharmacology and consultant respiratory physician of the University of Southampton, was part of the case. He attributed Ella\u2019s worsening asthma to the cumulative effect of the toxic air Ella was breathing. Let\u2019s face it, living that close to a motorway makes it hard to address pollution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also possible that traffic increases around the perimeter of cities as people look for payment-free routes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some states, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ww3.arb.ca.gov\/ch\/rd_technical_analysis_fact_sheet.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like California<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, actually mandate that homes near freeways must come with indoor infiltration systems. It\u2019s a pretty simple idea. Car parks are situated outside the city center with regular buses or trains into the center.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, this creates more traffic around the local area at peak times. Especially considering that most people choose to live outside cities and large towns, because it is less congested and built up. Like the perimeter of low emission zones, pollution just shifts to this area and the people who live there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_the_solution_to_expand_car-free_zones\"><\/span><strong>Is the solution to expand car-free zones?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes and no. There are actually a bunch of different actions required.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, in London, the local government identified 12 pollution hotspots that needed im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te attention. They replaced buses in these areas with those that either meet or exceed <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tfl.gov.uk\/modes\/driving\/low-emission-zone\/your-vehicle-and-lez\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ULEZ standards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The city has also invested in expanding its electric bus fleet and rolled out thousands of electric taxis and vehicle charging infrastructure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other efforts have included car-free days and <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/schoolstreets.org.uk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the School Streets program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which closes roads around schools to vehicle traffic at pick-up and drop-off times to encourage walking and cycling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the City of London, it has rolled this out successfully in 380 locations, leading to a 97% reduction in schools that exceed legal pollution limits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Dont_forget_about_trucks_and_vans\"><\/span><strong>Don\u2019t forget about trucks and vans<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Equally important is eliminating as many trucks from inner urban areas as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, fighting pollution is not just about eliminating cars.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vanarama.com\/latest-news\/the-uks-commercial-parking-crisis.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research by Vanarama in 2019 found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that 520,000 UK van drivers typically spend over 20 minutes looking for a parking space for each delivery they make.
