\n The Islanders\u2019 practice facility reopened for voluntary small-group workouts Monday as Phase 2 of the NHL\u2019s \u201cReturn to Play\u201d plan officially kicked off.<\/p>\n

A limited group of players, including Josh Bailey, Matt Martin, Thomas Greiss and Cal Clutterbuck, participated in Monday\u2019s workout at Northwell Health Ice Center, in East Meadow. Scott Mayfield, Devon Toews and Chris Gibson \u2014 who served as the starting goaltender for the team\u2019s AHL affiliate this season \u2014 were also seen walking into the facility Monday.<\/p>\n

The Rangers plan to reopen the MSG Training Center in Tarrytown beginning Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Speaking on a Zoom call with reporters following the Islanders\u2019 workout Monday, Bailey said the group \u201cdidn\u2019t go too crazy on Day 1\u201d but that it was nice to get back out on the ice with teammates.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter three months, there\u2019s a little bit of rust so you just get out there and get your legs underneath you, move the puck around a little bit, get some shots, just kind of go over the fundamental stuff,\u201d Bailey said. \u201cThen as we go we\u2019ll start ramping up the conditioning side of things, I\u2019m sure we\u2019ll do a little bit this week. Just keep progressing the closer and closer we get to camp.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bailey mentioned that he took a COVID-19 test this past weekend and another one Monday before participating in the small-group workout. He also said he expects to go into the practice facility three times this week.<\/p>\n

Players who participate in Phase 2 are expected to remain in the same groups of six or fewer to limit potential exposure until the league moves into Phase 3, which will conduct formal training camps to prepare for the 24-team playoff tournament that was app<\/a>roved last month. The league informed players at the end of May that the third phase would not take place until at least July 10.<\/p>\n

Coaches and other personnel are allowed to observe during Phase 2, but not skate. Additionally, players aren\u2019t permitted to work out or skate at other facilities during this time.<\/p>\n

Bailey, who welcomed a baby girl to his family during quarantine, said he was more \u201canxious\u201d to get back to playing hockey as opposed to being worried about his health. However, it\u2019s been a challenge for Bailey to imagine what Phase 4 and the NHL\u2019s 24-team playoff format will look like.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s really just getting your head wrapped around that it\u2019s going to be different. No matter how it all comes together, when, how, if, whatever the case may be, it\u2019s not going to be what we\u2019re accustomed to,\u201d he said. \u201cYeah we might come out to an empty building but you\u2019re still with the guys, you still kind of have that whole routine that we would normally go through.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bailey admitted he has wondered how long he\u2019ll have to be away from his wife and kids.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut that\u2019s all going to be part of it,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ll have to make sacrifices here and there when the time comes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rangers who are known to be in the area include Adam Fox, Artemi Panarin, Chris Kreider, Marc Staal, Brendan Smith and Julien Gauthier. However, it\u2019s unknown who will participate in Tuesday\u2019s voluntary workout.<\/p>\n

Igor Shesterkin\u2019s agent, Rick Komarow, told The Post that the rookie netminder has been training in Florida and is planning to be on the ice later this week. He is expected to remain in Florida for the time being.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
