The S&amp;P 500 was within striking distance of the closing level that would confirm it entered a bear market after reaching its all-time high on Jan. 3.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the end of the day, investor sentiment is not easy to gauge,\u201d said Chuck Carlson, chief executive officer at Horizon Investment Services in Hammond, Indiana. \u201cRecent bear markets have been bloody but brief.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut when you factor in inflation there\u2019s a possibility that a bear market will last longer than four or five months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average\u00a0fell 103.81 points, or 0.3%, to 31,730.30, the S&amp;P 500\u00a0lost 5.10 points to 3,930.08 and the Nasdaq Composite\u00a0rose 6.72 points to 11,370.96.<\/p>\n<p>Market leading megacap names, which thrived amid the low interest environment of the pandemic era, were the biggest drag, with <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le\u00a0and Microsoft weighing the heaviest.<\/p>\n<p>Market participants were digesting economic data, most recently the producer prices report released before Thursday\u2019s opening bell, which appear to suggest price growth reached its zenith in March. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/dow-stocks-fall2.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange Thursday.\" class=\"wp-image-22246294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/dow-stocks-fall2.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/dow-stocks-fall2.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/dow-stocks-fall2.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>All three major stock indexes seesawed before settling into a steep sell-off.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Even so, the Fed is still expected to hike key interest rates by at least 50 basis points at least three times in the coming months, in an effort to toss cold water on demand and rein in soaring prices.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a market that continues to struggle to calibrate the impact, the damage being done by inflation,\u201d Carlson added. \u201cAt the end of the day this is the first time in decades that investors have had to factor inflation into their market calculus.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Geopolitical tensions surrounding Russia\u2019s war on Ukraine were dialed up by Finland\u2019s announcement that it would apply for NATO membership, with Sweden expected to follow suit, a move which prompted vows of retaliation from the Kremlin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The conflict, dubbed by Russian President Vladimir Putin as a \u201cspecial military operation,\u201d has further fanned the flames of inflation by pressuring global energy and grain supplies.<\/p>\n<p>Among the 11 major sectors of the S&amp;P 500, tech shares\u00a0were suffering the biggest percentage loss.<\/p>\n<p>Earnings season is nearing the final stretch, and according to the most recent data, 79% of the S&amp;P 500 companies who have posted results delivered better-than-expected earnings, according to Refinitiv.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts now see aggregate first-quarter S&amp;P 500 earnings growth of 11%, up from 6.4% at quarter-end, per Refinitiv.<\/p>\n<p>Shares of luxury accessories company Tapestry jumped 16% after expressing confidence in a rebound in Chinese demand once COVID restrictions are lifted.<\/p>\n<p>Walt Disney\u00a0dipped 0.9% following the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> company\u2019s disappointing quarterly report.\u00a0\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
