If you trust the file, you can get around this with a simple Terminal command.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Move_Trusted_Files_Out_of_Quarantine\"><\/span>How to Move Trusted Files Out of Quarantine<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A Mac will sometimes encounter a file it doesn\u2019t trust and report that the file is damaged, and should be moved to the bin. You would be forgiven for listening to macOS and going with it, but much of the time there\u2019s nothing wrong with the app. Instead, macOS has quarantined the app since it suspects foul play.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-803602\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/file_damaged_move_to_trash.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"File is Damaged Error on macOS\" width=\"650\" height=\"346\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Assuming you trust the origin of the app that you have downloaded (for example, a piece of software directly from a developer you trust) you can attempt to ignore the warning and open the file anyway.<\/p>\n<p>To do this, open a new Terminal window and type (or paste the following command):<\/p>\n<pre>xattr -d com.apple.quarantine \/path\/to\/app.app<\/pre>\n<p>You\u2019ll need to replace <code>\/path\/to\/app.app<\/code>\u00a0with the target location of the file you want to release from quarantine. Files that have been shared via a USB drive or local network location are not subject to the same protections.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the app may legitimately be \u201cdamaged\u201d in that it won\u2019t work, and the Terminal command above won\u2019t do anything to resolve that. In that case, you\u2019re going to need to find another source for your app.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Always_Exercise_Caution\"><\/span>Always Exercise Caution<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Malware is more common than it once was on macOS, which means you should always be vigilant about what software you download and choose to run.
