The hopeful rookies had gotten sunrise after beautiful sunrise, sunset after beautiful sunset, all week long \u2014 but when it was finally her time to shine, Robinson woke up to gray skies and distant thunder.<\/p>\n<p>She sat through hours of hair and makeup, waited out the storm that temporarily halted production, then shot anyway \u2014 despite her blowout\u2019s long-gone expiration date and the less-than-ideal weather conditions.<\/p>\n<p>That rain never stood a chance against Robinson\u2019s ability to see the glass half-full.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI could have gotten insecure, but instead, I had to check my ego at the door and say, \u2018You know what? Now you\u2019re the only one who has these unique photos with a purple sky behind them,&#8217;\u201d the 24-year-old <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a>-media influencer told The Post. \u201cAnd I love that. She and the others are featured in the publication\u2019s annual Swimsuit Issue \u2014 which drops on Monday, May 16. The ultimate winner of the contest will be announced in August.<\/p>\n<p>Silver linings are kind of Robinson\u2019s thing. At age 10 in New York, she was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a connective tissue disorder that causes chronic pain and makes her highly susceptible to injury and unnaturally slow to heal. The latter took 13 months to heal. Robinson, a swimmer who wasn\u2019t playing contact sports or risking serious bodily impact on a daily basis, knew something was wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, her mom worked in health care, making world-class doctors accessible. (Her dad is a craftsman, specializing in home renovations.) Thanks to her mom\u2019s network, before long, Robinson was sitting in a Cornell pediatric geneticist\u2019s office receiving her diagnosis: Her body was betraying her at every turn.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after, Robinson was forced to give up swimming. \u201cI really thought I was gonna be going to the Olympics. She faced relentless interrogation by her peers: Why was she using a laptop to take notes in class? Why was she using the elevator instead of the stairs? That\u2019s when she started finding herself in front of the camera instead of behind it, acting as the subject for many of her own photos and videos, all created with social sharing top-of-mind.<\/p>\n<p>She soon began working as an ambassador for brands like Tinder and Abercrombie<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Before 2020, Robinson mostly used her own social media channels to share content about body image and marketing (and how the two intersect) \u2014 but she didn\u2019t post about her chronic illnesses. Robinson noted that many creators with serious or chronic illnesses avoid discussing the topic publicly, for fear of being doxxed and harassed. In the hopes of creating content that would be more meaningful, she slowly began sharing about her struggle with chronic illness. \u201cI would say that\u2019s when I really stepped into this role of being an advocate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over the past few years, Robinson\u2019s<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@itsgigirobinson?lang=en\"> social<\/a> media channels (she\u2019s active on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/itsgigirobinson\/\">Instagram<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@itsgigirobinson?lang=en\">TikTok<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/c\/GigiRobinson\/featured\">YouTube<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/itsgigirobinson?lang=en\">Twitter<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/gigirobinson\/\">LinkedIn<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pinterest.com\/itsgigirobinson\/_created\/\">Pinterest<\/a>) have amassed a collective following of roughly 150,000 users. Instead of, \u2018Oh my God, I wish I could,\u2019 asking themselves, \u2018How can I do that? Within minutes, Day<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/mj-day-9564a822_gigi-robinson-sports-illustrated-submission-activity-6899146664905691136-418M?utm_source=linkedin_share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop_web\"> shared the post<\/a>, and later admitted that it\u2019s what caught her eye about Robinson. Now, dozens more rookie hopefuls are following suit, taking to social media in an attempt to stand out from other applicants.<\/p>\n<p>In that way, Robinson recognizes she\u2019s a trendsetter.
