\n Former Vice President Joe Biden on Monday night said federal aid to police based should be tied to their ability to \u201cmeet certain basic standards of decency and honorableness.\u201d<\/p>\n

Biden made the suggestion on \u201cCBS Evening News<\/a>\u201d after repeating his campaign position that he is opposed to defunding police \u2014 a rallying cry of nationwide protesters demanding justice for the police killing of George Floyd.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, I don\u2019t support defunding the police,\u201d Biden told anchor Norah O\u2019Donnell.<\/p>\n

\u201cI support conditioning federal aid to police, based on whether or not they meet certain basic standards of decency and honorableness. And, in fact, are able to demonstrate they can protect the community and everybody in the community,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Earlier Monday, Biden\u2019s campaign said he supports \u201cthe urgent need for reform,\u201d including funding for public schools, summer programs, mental health and substance abuse treatment, \u201cso that officers can focus on the job of policing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis also means funding community policing programs that improve relationships between officers and residents, and provides the training that is needed to avert tragic, unjustifiable deaths,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n

According to the statement, Biden said funding should be made available so police departments can diversify to \u201cresemble the communities in which they serve.\u201d<\/p>\n

A number of cities \u2014 including New York, Los Angeles and Minneapolis \u2014 are considering diverting funds from their police departments to youth and social<\/a> service programs.<\/p>\n

Protesters and members of Black Lives Matter have urged politicians to \u201cdefund the police\u201d at national rallies after George Floyd\u2019s May 25 killing by Minneapolis police officers.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
