All the major car makers (and even some of<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lotuscars.com\/en-GB\/eletre\/\">the smaller ones<\/a>) are publicly committed to electric.<\/p>\n<p>But actually, buying a new electric car? That\u2019s another matter entirely.<\/p>\n<p>Volkswagen, the largest car manufacturer in the world, recently announced it had<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/96b7acaf-7984-4eab-83d7-940aa4ca20d4\">sold out<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>of electric vehicles in the US and Europe for the rest of 2022. Ford\u2019s E-Transit sold out before it had even<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/545291\/ford-etransit-sold-out\/\">started making them<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"corona-wrapper shift-cta hs-embed-tnw\">\n<div class=\"shift-cta-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"shift-cta-img\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/events.tnw\/hardfork-2018\/uploads\/companies\/polestar-cover.jpg\"\/><\/div>\n<p><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/events.tnw\/hardfork-2018\/uploads\/companies\/polestar-cover.jpg\"\/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<div class=\"shift-cta-input\">\n<h2 class=\"shift-cta-title\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sign_up_and_get_your_free_EV_guide\"><\/span>Sign up and get your free EV guide<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"shift-cta-tagline\">The beginners&#8217; guide to getting an EV<\/p>\n<p><!--[if lte IE 8]><![endif]--><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Even the most basic (lower specification) version of Tesla\u2019s Model 3 vehicle will now not be<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/en_gb\/model3\/design#overview\">delivered for over a year<\/a>, despite the company being capable of the largest production volumes in the world \u2013 a recent<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/tesla-others-prepare-shanghai-factory-restarts-city-aims-ease-lockdown-2022-04-18\/\">halt in production in China<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>notwithstanding.<\/p>\n<p>Turn the clock back to 2019, just when the electric vehicle revolution was really getting going<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smmt.co.uk\/2019\/07\/bump-in-the-road-to-zero-as-low-emission-car-demand-reverses-in-june\/\">in terms of sales figures<\/a>, and Tesla had stockpiles of cars in the UK they could deliver to customers within days. Now, even though they can produce vastly more vehicles, you will likely wait a long time for delivery of a new one.<\/p>\n<p>For now, then, motorists who aspire to own a brand new electric vehicle will struggle to move forward. So too will those governments who have plans to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars. In Norway for example, a ban is due to come into force\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autocar.co.uk\/car-news\/industry\/norway-phase-out-petrol-and-diesel-cars-2025?msclkid=96fca194d10a11ecb5761e950a1a5abb\">in 2025<\/a>; in the UK, it is<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-54981425?msclkid=ba6a0184d10a11ecb5dcfb5b8b323802\">2030<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These targets rely in large part on the usual cycle of<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fleetfinancials.com\/155875\/how-to-calculate-optimal-replacement-cycles\">vehicle replacement<\/a>. And for old vehicles to be replaced by new ones, the supply needs to be at a level that can replenish those being scr<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ed, as well as allowing for some growth in demand.<\/p>\n<p>At the moment, there are simply not enough electric vehicles being made to meet that demand. I am involved in<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/aru.ac.uk\/business-and-law\/research\/projects\/eastern-new-energy-ene\">ongoing research<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>looking into how and when various firms are replacing their old internal combustion engine vehicles with electric ones \u2013 and one of the major barriers seems to be sourcing them. Government targets for roads full of electric vehicles may soon seem hopelessly unrealistic.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"End_of_the_road\"><\/span>End of the road?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>So what has gone wrong? To begin with, in the early days of electric vehicles, manufacturers were playing their cards safe. This was a new and unknown world for them, and it wasn\u2019t clear if other competing technologies (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/hydrogen-cars-wont-overtake-electric-vehicles-because-theyre-hampered-by-the-laws-of-science-139899\">such as hydrogen power<\/a>) might be more popular with consumers. But batteries won out, and consumer demand \u2013 helped along by those plans to ban petrol and diesel \u2013 soared.<\/p>\n<p>Current issues have been brought on in part by COVID-19 affecting global supply chains and a shortage of semiconductors, a vital component of modern vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>In spring 2022, Tesla had to close its Shanghai factory\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/tesla-others-prepare-shanghai-factory-restarts-city-aims-ease-lockdown-2022-04-18\/\">for three weeks<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>due to lockdowns in China. And just when it got the factory back open, it had to<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/money\/companies\/tesla-production-lags-in-shanghai-due-to-parts-shortages-covid-restrictions\/ar-AAX85x9?ocid=uxbndlbing&amp;msclkid=28fd0089d10b11ec84085b185b4613c8\">reduce production<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>due to supply chain issues.<\/p>\n<p>This is because Tesla doesn\u2019t make all the parts to build the cars in the one factory (although it produces more than the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cleantechnica.com\/2022\/01\/19\/vertical-integration-teslas-secret-to-overcoming-challenges\/\">industry average<\/a>), so as the factories that supply Tesla also shut due to lockdowns, the necessary parts do not arrive. CEO Elon Musk has now suggested his company may stop taking orders,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/business\/toyota-tesla-elon-musk-inflation-supply-chains-vertu-b999312.html?msclkid=648e7944d11511ecb2d463ab118eb2fe\">telling<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>the Financial Times: \u201cThe frustration we\u2019re seeing from customers is being unable to get them a car.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cWe are actually probably going to stop taking orders beyond a certain period of time because some of the timing is a year away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Again, it is certainly not just Tesla that is affected. Semiconductor issues are ongoing, and many vehicles are being<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thedriven.io\/2022\/02\/25\/polestar-cuts-price-of-pilot-pack-after-features-removed-due-to-chip-shortage\/\">shipped without features<\/a>, or parked in fields<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/584672\/ford-f150-lightning-stockpile-supply-constraints\/\">waiting for parts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These backlogs will take a long time to clear, and will be a major headache for everyone concerned. Manufacturers and customers will be frustrated, while politicians relying on electric vehicles for the future of transport policy may need to adjust their expectations and demands.<\/p>\n<p>Most importantly, the current situation is a terrible blow for global efforts to<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/polluting-suvs-will-be-on-roads-for-the-next-two-decades-what-should-we-do-with-them-158594\">reduce carbon emissions<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>and deal with climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Pushing back important targets on road vehicles could be catastrophic for the planet, but we still need vehicles. We may now have to shift towards using fewer cars through more ride-sharing, or look to alternative forms of transport, and even converting older cars to electric.
