\n Three Beirut firefighters \u2014 all from the same family and best friends \u2014 are still missing and presumed dead after responding to last week\u2019s catastrophic explosion at the city\u2019s port.<\/p>\n

Grieving relatives admit that the chances of the trio being alive are slim to zero and have unfurled a banner to their \u201cheroes\u2019\u2019 on a stone wall outside the family compound in the nearby Lebanese mountain town of Qartaba \u2014 saying that now, they just want to recover their bodies.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn one piece or several, we want our sons back,\u201d Rita Hitti \u2014 whose son Najib Hitti, 27, is one of the missing men \u2014 told Agence France-Presse.<\/p>\n

Najib and his cousin Charbel Hitti, 22, were in the same fire truck as it raced toward the scene of a blaze that started in a port warehouse Aug. 4, the Washington Post said. Najib\u2019s uncle Charbel Karam, 37, hopped in an ambulance that was headed there, too.<\/p>\n

All three men grew up together and were so close that they made sure they worked the same shifts, kin said.<\/p>\n

Karam playfully Facetimed his 2-year-old daughter on the way to what the emergency responders thought was a routine call, telling her, \u201cWe\u2019re firefighters! We\u2019re going to put out a fire,\u2019\u2019 the Washington Post said.<\/p>\n

But by the time the firefighters got to the scene, the mood had changed.<\/p>\n

Screams of \u201cYallah! Yallah! Yallah! Yallah!\u201d \u2014 Arabic for, \u201cLet\u2019s go! Hurry up!\u201d \u2014 erupted, and Charbel Hitti turned to another firefighter and said he was worried.<\/p>\n

Seconds later came a devastating explosion \u2014 caused by the ignition of 2,750 tons of highly volatile fertilizer \u2014 that leveled a large swath of the city, bringing down buildings and burying dozens of people in rubble, killing at least 220, with dozens still missing and 6,000 injured.<\/p>\n

Rita Hitti told AFP that she and other family members rushed to the scene after the explosion to look for their loved ones, only to be turned back by security.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told them I would know my boys from their smell,\u201d Rita said.<\/p>\n

\u201c \u2018Let me enter to search for them, and when I whiff their smell, I will know where they are,\u2019 \u201d she said she pleaded with a guard, to no avail.<\/p>\n

The tribute banner hanging outside the family\u2019s home has the missing related trio standing together dressed in tuxedos and bow ties \u2014 with a massive plume of smoke and three rescue workers at the explosion scene as their backdrop.<\/p>\n

The family\u2019s grief is mixed with anger, as accusations of government corruption and negligence over the incident have fueled widespread violent protests across Lebanon.<\/p>\n

The country\u2019s prime minister and his entire cabinet resigned amid the furor by Monday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe gave them heroes, and they returned them to us as \u2018martyrs,\u2019 \u201d Rita Hitti scoffed to AFP, furious at officials\u2019 use of the term \u201cmartyrs\u2019\u2019 for rescue-worker victims.<\/p>\n

She said her loved ones are only \u201cmartyrs of treachery.\u2019\u2019\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
