<\/p>\n<p>Gabriella Barboza, 22, was horrified after discovering that she had neck cancer during a lesson on \u2014 wait for it \u2014 diagnosing cancerous growths. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I found out, my world collapsed,\u201d Barboza told <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>flash of the cruelly ironic incident, which occurred at an undisclosed medical school in S\u00e3o Paulo, Brazil, in 2020. <\/p>\n<p>The third-year medical student recounted how she had been called upon by her teacher, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/daniel-gomes-lichtenthaler-3a080323\/?originalSubdomain=br\">Dr. Daniel Lichtenthaler<\/a>, to demonstrate the proper method of examining patients for neck tumors. <\/p>\n<p>However, during the simulated inspection, the professor discovered some actual cancer symptoms, whereupon the worried educator told Barboza to get checked out after class. <\/p>\n<p>The unfortunately apt pupil sought confirmation \u2014 and received the earth-shattering news: Barboza had a form of thyroid cancer called papillary thyroid carcinoma, also known as  PTC.<\/p>\n<p>PTC is the most common type of thyroid cancer, affecting around 200,000 Americans each year, mostly between the ages of 30 and 50, and more commonly seen in women than men,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/types\/thyroid\/patient\/thyroid-treatment-pdq\">according to the National Cancer Institute<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img Barboza had been called to the front of her class so her teacher could demonstrate how to check a patient\u2019s neck for cancer.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">@gabriellabarboza\/Newsflash<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Comprising 80% of all thyroid cancer cases, PTC is also the most prevalent cancer in women younger than 25, according to research <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/columbiasurgery.org\/conditions-and-treatments\/papillary-thyroid-cancer\">conducted by the Columbia Thyroid Center<\/a> in NYC.<\/p>\n<p>Barboza said she was devastated by the diagnosis: \u201cI kept thinking: \u2018I\u2019m too young to face this.\u2019 I cried a lot and didn\u2019t want to believe it.
