<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       In the aftermath of Saturday\u2019s supermarket shooting in Buffalo, N.Y., there\u2019s growing awareness of the widely spreading beliefs espoused by this suspect, as well as other mass shooters accused of racially motivated attacks. Described by the Anti-Defamation League as a \u201cracist conspiracy theory,\u201d the \u201cgreat replacement\u201d theory falsely alleges that people of color, particularly immigrants, pose a political and cultural threat to white people.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       The 18-year-old suspect in a shooting that killed 10 people is alleged to be the author of a white-supremacist document, described by the New York Post as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/05\/14\/buffalo-shooter-payton-gendron-posted-white-supremacist-manifesto\/\" class=\"icon none\">a \u201c180-page diatribe,\u201d<\/a> that repeatedly referenced the theory.<\/p>\n<p> The Post noted that investigators believe the document \u201cis authentic and matches key personal details of the suspect and how the crime unfolded,\u201d though it added investigators still are \u201cwaiting to get a computer owned by [him].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here are five things to know about the theory, especially in connection with the Buffalo shooting.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_the_theory_about\"><\/span>What is the theory about?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>The \u201cgreat replacement\u201d theory, which is sometimes called \u201creplacement theory,\u201d is rooted in the idea that \u201cwelcoming immigration policies \u2014 particularly those impacting nonwhite immigrants \u2014 are part of a plot designed to undermine or \u2018replace&#8217;\u201d the white mainstream, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/immigrationforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Replacement-Theory-Explainer-1122.pdf\" class=\"icon none\">the National Immigration Forum<\/a>, an immigrant-advocacy group.<\/p>\n<p>The organization says the theory has different iterations, noting it \u201ccan be found embedded in a web of other xenophobic conspiracies, including antisemitic notions.\u201d No matter how the theory is expressed, the Forum says, it\u2019s almost always rooted in \u201ca life-or-death scenario concerning the fate of \u2018white America.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The theory has been tied to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/europe\/new-zealand-suspect-inspired-by-far-right-french-intellectual-who-feared-nonwhite-immigration\/2019\/03\/15\/8c39fba4-6201-4a8d-99c6-aa42db53d6d3_story.html\" class=\"icon none\">other mass shootings<\/a>. In 2019, a suspect who allegedly subscribed to the great replacement theory killed 51 people at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. A few months later, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/08\/03\/us\/patrick-crusius-el-paso-shooter-manifesto.html\" class=\"icon none\">authorities in El Paso, Texas, said a man posted a screed online<\/a> alleging there was an \u201cHispanic invasion of Texas.\u201d He is currently on trial for killing 23 people at a Walmart store. <\/p>\n<p>The suspect in the 2018 shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue, meanwhile, \u201cwas convinced that Jews \u2014 specifically the immigration non-profit HIAS \u2014 were behind the plot to dilute the nation\u2019s white Christian identity with newcomers,\u201d a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/us-news\/.premium-the-great-replacement-theory-is-going-to-get-more-american-jews-killed-1.10802200\" class=\"icon none\">columnist at the Israeli newspaper Haaretz noted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_is_the_Buffalo_shooting_connected_to_the_theory\"><\/span>How is the Buffalo shooting connected to the theory?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>In the 180-page document linked to the alleged shooter, the author espoused <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2022\/05\/15\/payton-gendron-suspect-buffalo-shooting\/9786650002\/\" class=\"icon none\">\u201cracist, anti-immigrant and antisemitic beliefs,\u201d<\/a> according to USA Today. (The document also detailed a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> plan for the shooting.) <\/p>\n<p>Specifically, the document pointed to low white birth rates globally, referring to the situation as a \u201ccrisis\u201d that \u201cwill ultimately result in the complete racial and cultural replacement of the European people,\u201d according to the New York Post.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Who_came_up_with_the_theory\"><\/span>Who came up with the theory?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>The Anti-Defamation League says the theory \u201chas its roots in early 20th\u00a0century French nationalism and books by French nationalist and author Maurice Barres.\u201d But it says the actual French term, \u201cLe Grand Remplacement\u201d (in English, \u201cthe Great Replacement\u201d), was popularized in a 2011 essay by the French writer and critic Renaud Camus.<\/p>\n<p>In a 2019 story about Camus, the New York Times <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/09\/20\/world\/europe\/renaud-camus-great-replacement.html\" class=\"icon none\">noted the following<\/a>: \u201cTo him, the immigrants are \u2018colonizing\u2019 France by giving birth to more children and making its cities, towns \u2014 and even villages \u2014 unlivable.\u201d<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Have_any_mainstream_politicians_promoted_the_theory\"><\/span>Have any mainstream politicians promoted the theory?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>White replacement theory is an old idea that was once only <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/09\/26\/1040756471\/what-is-white-replacement-theory-explaining-the-white-supremacist-rhetoric\" class=\"icon none\">on the fringes of white-supremacist dogma.<\/a> But it\u2019s no longer just on the fringes.<\/p>\n<p>In <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/05\/15\/us\/replacement-theory-shooting-tucker-carlson.html\" class=\"icon none\">a story following the murders<\/a> in Buffalo, the New York Times reported, \u201c(V)ersions of the (theory\u2019s) same ideas, sanded down and shorn of explicitly anti-Black and antisemitic <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">theme<\/a>s, have become commonplace in the Republican Party \u2014 spoken aloud at congressional hearings, echoed in Republican campaign advertisements and embraced by a growing array of right-wing candidates and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> personalities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a Saturday tweet, Rep. Adam Kinzinger, an Illinois Republican who has often been at odds with his party in recent years, accused fellow Rep. Elise Stefanik, a Republican who represents parts of New York state, of posting Facebook ads pushing the theory. \u201cDid you know @EliseStefanik pushes white replacement theory?\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetTweet\n            inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetTweet\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"dynamic-inset-container article__inset__dynamic\">\n<style>\n            iframe.twitter-tweet {\n                width: 100% !important;\n            }\n        <\/style>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\"><p>\n            <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AdamKinzinger\/status\/1525623186594856962?s=20&amp;t=uxLSd-TdEwAHesh0XwH2VA\"><\/a>\n            <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>        <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       Alex DeGrasse, a senior adviser to Stefanik, issued the following statement Monday: \u201cDespite sickening and false reporting, Congresswoman Stefanik has never advocated for any racist position or made a racist statement.\u201d<\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_the_theory_gaining_ground_among_the_general_public\"><\/span>Is the theory gaining ground among the general public?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>At least one survey suggests that might be the case. A recent Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll found that \u201croughly one in three (32%) adults agree that a group of people is trying to replace native-born Americans with immigrants for electoral gains.\u201d The poll also found that 29% of those surveyed \u201cexpress concern that an increase in immigration is leading to native-born Americans losing economic, political, and cultural influence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Claims like those are constantly debunked.
