\n As if 2020 wasn\u2019t weird enough, Dunkin\u2019 is getting into the cereal game<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Massachusetts-based coffee and donuts empire is releasing two new breakfast cereals based on two of its most popular coffee drinks: Caramel Macchiato and Mocha Latte.<\/p>\n

The team-up with Post Consumer Brands, the makers of Honey Bunches of Oats, Shredded Wheat, Raisin Bran and other familiar cereals, is expected to hit grocery shelves later this month.<\/p>\n

The companies say Dunkin\u2019 coffee concentrate is added to the cereal, which consists of little crunchy spheres mixed with flavored marshmallow bits. A serving has about as much caffeine as a tenth of an 8-ounce cup of coffee.<\/p>\n

Reaction on social media<\/a> has ranged from enthusiastic anticipation to horrified yet intrigued.<\/p>\n

Skeptics \u2014 and there are many \u2014 see another sign of the apocalypse while others see redemption for an otherwise dreadful year.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love to pretend like I\u2019m not a die hard New Englander but if I don\u2019t get to try the Dunkin\u2019 donut cereal, I will absolutely lose my mind,\u201d said one Twitter user.<\/p>\n

Still others see a marketing opportunity missed.<\/p>\n

A 10-year-old girl who recently taste-tested the cereals for The Boston Globe suggested: \u201cThey should make a doughnut flavored cereal.\u201d<\/p>\n

To be sure, the doughnut chain did try just that. It launched a cereal line based on their popular glazed and chocolate donuts in the 1980s that didn\u2019t exactly take off.<\/p>\n

But the company\u2019s interest in trying to break into the market again is understandable: nearly 65 percent of American adults drink coffee every day and nearly 90 percent of US households consume cereal, according to Dunkin\u2019.<\/p>\n

The cereal effort comes as Dunkin\u2019s brick-and-mortar shops, like others nationwide, have taken a hit during the coronavirus pandemic. The company recently announced plans to close roughly 800 US stores this year, or about 8 percent of its US locations, as a result.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
