The company makes money by taking a cut on every marketplace transaction.<\/p>\n<p>Some users lower the entry by forming groups called \u201cguilds.\u201d This involves owners of the NFTs lending them to players in exchange for a share of the profits.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s risky for the owners, who can invest vast sums in the volatile assets, and the potential gains for the player are lower \u2014 but there are also benefits.<\/p>\n<p>Earnings can still be substantial \u2014 particularly in the emerging economies that are the game\u2019s biggest markets \u2014\u00a0 and guilds reduce the financial risks of players.<\/p>\n<p>Yet this doesn\u2019t resolve the fundamental issue: new players need to replace the ones who cash out.<\/p>\n<p>This wasn\u2019t a problem when Axie was adding more users each month than those it already had. But when growth slowed and the token price slipped, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/naavik.co\/deep-dives\/axie-infinity#axie-decon=\">player earnings dived<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">After months of incredible growth, the daily earnings of the typical player of Axie Infinity (a &#8220;scholar&#8221; in the Philippines) have fallen below the Philippines&#8217; minimum wage line for all but the high ranking players, and even they have seen earnings decline since August <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ejidWkWc1G\">pic.twitter.com\/ejidWkWc1G<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Lars &#8220;Totally Texas&#8221; Doucet (@larsiusprime) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/larsiusprime\/status\/1459191090100244483?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 12, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Axie suffered a further setback when hackers stole $625 million of cryptocurrency Ronin, the blockchain behind the game. The attack is the largest crypto heist to date, <span>according to\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/defiyield.app\/rekt-database\">REKT Database<\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Axie\u2019s maker <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.protocol.com\/bulletins\/axie-infinity-sky-mavis-reimbursement#:~:text=Axie%20Infinity's%20maker%20is%20pledging%20to%20reimburse%20users%20for%20the%20hack.&amp;text=Eight%20days%20ago%2C%20over%20%24625,to%20pay%20its%20users%20back.\">pledged to reimburse<\/a> affected users, but <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/coinmarketcap.com\/currencies\/smooth-love-potion\/\">the game\u2019s coin value<\/a> and player numbers have continued to dip.<\/p>\n<p>In May, Axie\u2019s daily active users <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1g4d2lzBytC-Wo4_rKGHjR3vGeJHb8hd1jb55qRf_S2g\/edit#gid=0\">fell below 1 million<\/a> for the first in eight months. The figure had peaked at over 2.7 million in November.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fun_thirst\"><\/span>Fun thirst<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Axie\u2019s decline has reverberated across the GameFi community. Companies in the sector are now reassessing their business models.<\/p>\n<p>At a panel discussion during <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blockdownconf.com\/\">the BlockDown conference<\/a> last week, GameFi execs centered their strategies on prioritizing pleasure over profit.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt\u2019s going to come back to web2 fundamentals of needing a good game to survive,\u201d said Corey Wilton, co-founder of Pexabay, a\u00a0play-to-earn horse racing simulator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>AAA games, however, have development costs that GameFi firms can\u2019t afford.<\/p>\n<p>Fancy Studios, which creates 8-bit games is trying to overcome this hurdle by tapping into the nostalgic appeal of retro classics.<\/p>\n<p>Eric McIntire, the company\u2019s CCO, hopes this shifts the user focus from play-to-earn to play-<em>and<\/em>-earn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want you to happen to earn money while you\u2019re doing something that you enjoy doing anyway,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile you\u2019re standing in line for a coffee, we want you to pay for the coffee by playing a game that you\u2019re having fun playing anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"post-image post-mediaBleed aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1386923 js-lazy\" alt=\"Fancy Birds hopes the simple concept captures casual gamers.
