Her lab aims to take AI research into the places they neglect.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTechnology affects the whole world, but the whole world is not getting a chance to affect technology right now,\u201d Gebru said last December.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you want community-rooted research and you need to displace people from their communities, and they all have to go to Silicon Valley\u2026 That\u2019s not the kind of thing I want to contribute to.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chomba-Kinywa\u2019s career in IT for development has exposed risks of the inverse: sending tech experts from the US to other nations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"On_the_ground\"><\/span>On the ground<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chomba-Kinywa recalls an example from her spell as an innovation lead for UNICEF around a decade ago.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A team from New York had pitched using drones for medical deliveries in her home country of Zambia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-token-index=\"0\" spellcheck=\"false\" class=\"notion-enable-hover\" data-reactroot=\"\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"c-richText__pullQuote\">\n<div class=\"c-richText__pullQuoteGradient\">\n<p class=\"c-richText__pullQuoteQuote\">First off, I\u2019m a sucker for hardshell <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> gear.\n            <\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI had to tell them, if you land a drone in my grandma\u2019s village without telling anybody, somebody might shoot that thing down \u2014 because it will be seen as witchcraft,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe had to add a project pillar around communication with local communities. These are things you can miss when you don\u2019t have the local context or expertise to translate certain things.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chomba-Kinywa aims to mitigate this risk by expanding local capabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Greenpeace, this involves all the campaign network\u2019s national and regional organizations completing their own digital maturity assessments and using local teams to lead in context-specific digital transformation journeys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some may want to increase their data science skills; others will prioritize creating a more collaborative culture. In Kenya, for instance, mobile payments took off long before they became common in the US and Europe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While most Kenyans still don\u2019t have formal bank accounts, an estimated 96% of households now have a mobile money account.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There would be many more technological breakthroughs in the Global South if internet penetration was higher.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chomba-Kinywa points to Zambia as an example. The majority of the population derives its livelihood from agriculture, but agriculture contributes under 10% of the country\u2019s GDP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In contrast, the internet sector alone comprised <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-internet-economy-idUSKBN1WB2QB\">around 10% of US GDP in 2018<\/a>. If Zambia had the same level of internet penetration, the impact could be transformative.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Mutual_interests\"><\/span>Mutual interests<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Big tech can make the internet more equitable, but seems more committed to exploiting the international tax system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2020, ActionAid, Chomba-Kinywa\u2019s former employer, found that 20 developing countries may be missing <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/actionaid.org\/news\/2020\/28bn-tax-gap-exposed-actionaid-research-reveals-tip-iceberg-big-techs-big-tax-bill-global#_ftn1\">up to $2.8bn in tax revenue<\/a>\u00a0from <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a>, Alphabet, and Microsoft due to unfair global rules.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That money could transform internet access and digital skills \u2014 which would be in Big Tech\u2019s interests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Africa\u2019s fast-expanding population and markets can offer huge opportunities for businesses with slowing growth in their home markets.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"c-richText c-richText--large\">\n<div class=\"c-richText c-richText--large\">\n<em>Did you know Priscilla Chomba-Kinywa is speaking at the<span>\u00a0<\/span>TNW Conference<span>\u00a0<\/span>this summer?
