Today, we\u2019re watching a video essay that looks at why the score to Darren Aronofsky\u2019s Requiem for a Dream is so terrifying.&lt;\/em&gt;\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<hr\/>\n<p>One of the most bloodless horror films ever made, <strong><em>Requiem for a Dream <\/em><\/strong>arguably did more to turn kids off of drugs than D.A.R.E. ever did. An incredibly grim and emotionally devastating breakthrough feature from <strong>Darren Aronofsky<\/strong>, the 2000 film follows four Coney Island residents whose utopic dreams are steadily squashed by their respective addictions. While the fame-obsessed Sara (Ellen Burstyn) gobbles speed to lose weight for an upcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> show <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earance, her son (Jared Leto) and his circle (Marlon Wayans and Jennifer Connelly) chase their own dreams and dragons with equally horrific results.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most iconic (if you want to call it that) components of the film \u2014 apart from its nightmare-inducing imagery \u2014 is its score. Composed by <strong>Clint Mansell<\/strong> (in his second of six collaborations with Aronofsky), the \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/track\/62Da3JOu9H9EIgmqV7DoLG?si=43635f88f57b444b\">Lux Aeterna<\/a>\u201d theme was especially unescapable at the turn of the millennia. Today, it\u2019s undeniably recognizable even if you <em>haven\u2019t\u00a0<\/em>seen Aronofsky\u2019s film; a resolution-less melody that churns and swirls, eternally chasing its tail like all of our four, tragic protagonists.<\/p>\n<p>But, as the video essay points out, it\u2019s worth putting the iconic track in its context. As the video essay below explains in evocative detail, there are six main musical motifs amidst Mansell\u2019s score: <strong>Lux Aeterna<\/strong> (the thesis of the film representing the failure of dreams to succeed under the shadow of addiction); <strong>party<\/strong> (brimming with contagious high energy); <strong>dream<\/strong> (which as its name suggests, connotes unrealistic planning); <strong>ghost<\/strong> (a melancholic refrain for the film\u2019s doomed lovers); <strong>tense<\/strong> (brimming with emotional overwhelm), and finally <strong>meltdown<\/strong> (a sorrowful climax about the consequences of addiction).<\/p>\n<p>The essay unpacks each of these motifs apart one by one, relaying how each of them is woven throughout the film\u2019s narrative and bolstered by unnerving, visceral sound design (I never need to hear a bone saw again, thanks).
