\n Nobody knows better than Joe Biden that his veep pick Kamala Harris can be a pit bull \u2014 she regularly went after him while still vying for the top spot on the Democratic presidential ticket.<\/p>\n

Harris \u2014 whom the Democratic presidential candidate picked as his running mate Tuesday \u2014 famously pounced on him during a 2019 primary-race debate over his opposition to US Department of Education-ordered busing in the 1970s.<\/p>\n

The former top California prosecutor-turned-US senator first publicly grilled Biden over why he has boasted about working well with former US Sens. James Eastland and Herman Talmadge, who were known segregationists at the time.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do not believe you are racist,\u201d Harris told Biden. \u201cBut I also believe, and it is personal \u2014 it was hurtful to hear you talk about the reputations of two United States senators who built their reputations and careers on the segregation of race in this country.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is not only that, but you also worked with them to oppose busing,\u201d she said \u2014 noting that she was part of the second class to integrate her public school growing up in California and was bussed.<\/p>\n

Biden angrily fired back that Harris was making a \u201cmischaracterization of my position across the board.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did not praise racists,\u201d he insisted. \u201cThat is not true. No. 1. No. 2 \u2014 if we want to have this campaign litigated on who supports civil rights and whether I did or not, I\u2019m happ<\/a>y to do that.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did not oppose busing in America,\u2019\u2019 added Biden \u2014 who served as vice president under the country\u2019s first black president, Barack Obama.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I opposed is busing ordered by the Department of Education, that\u2019s what I opposed.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

A few months earlier, Harris \u2014 who dropped out of the Democratic presidential race in December \u2014 also said she believed the women who have stepped forward to say Biden made them uncomfortable with unwanted touching.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe them, and I respect them being able to tell their story and having the courage to do it,\u201d Harris said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
