This installment focuses on the true story behind the new Peacock miniseries Angelyne, starring Emmy Rossum.&lt;\/em&gt;\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<hr\/>\n<p>She has been likened to Banksy. Seen as a forerunner to Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton. And <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/angelyne-la-billboard-diva-30-years-1025678\/\">been called<\/a>, in a\u00a0<em>Hollywood Reporter\u00a0<\/em>article by Gary Baum, \u201cthe enigmatic LA billboard diva.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman in question is Angelyne, the so-called \u201cbillboard queen.\u201d In the 1980s, Angelyne <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eared on billboards throughout the city. The catch? Angelyne herself was behind the billboard campaign. As Baum wrote in 2015:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Both the famous-for-being-famous reality culture of the 2000s and the brand-yourself social media hustle of this moment can be traced back to her pioneering DIY billboard campaign.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Angelyne, her billboards, and the pursuit of fame are the subject of a new miniseries from Peacock,\u00a0<em><strong>Angelyne<\/strong>. <\/em>The show features <strong>Emmy Rossum\u00a0<\/strong>(<em>Shameless<\/em>) in the titular role. Here is a look at the true story behind the show.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_First_Billboard\"><\/span>The First Billboard<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Baum notes that Angelyne is primarily a local celebrity. Go to other major cities, and you\u2019re not likely to encounter someone who knows the billboard queen. But in Los Angeles, everyone knows who she is. And it\u2019s not a bad place to be royal.<\/p>\n<p>Before her fame in the early 1980s, Angelyne worked as a musician, trying, like so many do, to make it in Hollywood. In 1982, Baum reported, Angelyne was attempting to enlarge a pin-up poster of herself. She wanted to advertise \u201cthe eponymous struggling rock band she led at the time to billboard size.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In doing so, Angelyne met Hugo Maisnik, a wealthy, young entrepreneur who agreed to bankroll the billboards. Angelyne described him to\u00a0<em>The Hollywood Reporter\u00a0<\/em>as a \u201cvery eccentric, bored prankster.\u201d In the years that followed, Angelyne would soon be everywhere.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_Signature_Look\"><\/span>A Signature Look<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Those familiar with Angelyne\u2019s billboards may know them from a single color: pink. The blonde-haired Angelyne wears pink and is often pictured alongside her Corvette of the same color. And while many may easily recognize that signature look, few know the story behind the star.<\/p>\n<p>As Ajay Sahgal <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-1995-04-23-tm-57708-story.html\">wrote in a 1995 profile<\/a> in the\u00a0<em>Los Angeles Times:\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I have lived in Los Angeles all my life, I have seen Angelyne billboards almost every day for 10 years and I have no idea who this woman is.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Sahgal writes that friends often spotted Angelyne about town, sometimes with celebrities. Or they would see her in the famous hot-pink Corvette, which featured the license plate LEAN LUV. Sahgal attempts to conduct an in-person interview with Angelyne, but her publicist, who was reached via a phone number on the billboards, just faxes over a selection of press clippings.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, Sahgal gets Angelyne on the phone for an interview. When asked why she is famous, Angelyne responds:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Because I am. Everyone knows who I am. I\u2019m famous for the magic I possess.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Angelyne_About_Town\"><\/span>Angelyne About Town<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Part of Angelyne\u2019s enigmatic fame comes in one of the most organic forms possible: simply riding about Los Angeles in that hot-pink Corvette. Profiles of Angelyne often discuss this favorite Los Angeles pastime, of fans fawning over Angelyne.<\/p>\n<p>Her sudden appearance sparks excitement among everyone in Hollywood. Baum reports that Courteney Cox once went up to Angelyne to proclaim, \u201cI love you.\u201d After spotting Angelyne, Kim Kardashian posted on Instagram a memory of seeing her as a child and thinking, \u201cShe looks the same &amp; in the same car! Made me smile.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And for tourists who may just pass through, you might still spot the star in her car, selling merchandise from the trunk and charging $20 for a photograph. Performance artist and critic Kate Durbin told Baum:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>She performs the narrative of Los Angeles in a complicated way. The New Age-y stuff. How everything has a price. She\u2019s the literal embodiment of those ideals. One of the things we can gain from looking at Angelyne is that life is a performance.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Candidate_Angelyne\"><\/span>Candidate Angelyne<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>From time to time, Angelyne has also dipped her toe into politics. In 2002, she ran for mayor of Hollywood (an honorary gig), Baum reports, promising \u201chot pink glamour.\u201d The following year, she ran in the state\u2019s gubernatorial recall election, and Arnold Schwarzenegger ended up with the top job. Her slogan:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0We\u2019ve had Gray, we\u2019ve had\u00a0Brown, now it\u2019s time for some blond and pink.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Last year, she once again got involved in California politics. During the recall election to replace Governor Gavin <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>om (which he won), Angelyne gave <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lamag.com\/citythinkblog\/angelyne-governor-newsom-recall\/\">an interview<\/a> to\u00a0<em>Los Angeles Magazine\u00a0<\/em>about a potential run. She said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>My slogans are \u201cGood Luck California\u201d and \u201cI have the Key to California.\u201d I\u2019m going to be sitting on the key. In 2003 I set the pace and the pathway for people to run who were not just the gray-suited people. I\u2019m this gorgeous blonde with big boobs and people saw that if Angelyne can run with that image, we can all do it and 500 people followed my lead.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Who_Is_Angelyne\"><\/span>Who Is Angelyne?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In 2017, Baum published a detailed profile in\u00a0<em>The Hollywood\u00a0<\/em><em>Reporter<\/em> under the headline, \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/angelyne-la-billboard-diva-30-years-1025678\/\">The Mystery of LA Billboard Diva Angelyne\u2019s Real Identity Is Finally Solved<\/a>.\u201d This article, and the investigation to find out Angelyne\u2019s past, served as a major inspiration for the Peacock series.<\/p>\n<p>As Baum reports, a genealogist had taken a special interest in the story and worked to uncover just exactly who she was. He found that Angelyne was born Renee Goldberg, in Poland, in 1950, to two Holocaust survivors. After the Second World War, the family moved to Israel and later to the United States in 1959.<\/p>\n<p>Her mother died when Angelyne was just 14. She attended high school in the San Fernando Valley. Baum reports that she got married and then divorced in 1969. And that is where the \u201cpaper trail ends.\u201d Baum writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I floated the idea of Goldberg as <span data-scayt_word=\"Angelyne\" data-scaytid=\"66\">Angelyne<\/span>\u00a0to friends and colleagues who had been fascinated by her over the years and occasionally had had their own fleeting curbside run-ins, the surprisingly unsurprised reaction (particularly from the Jewish ones) was consensus and instantaneous: That makes sense. The stereotypical old-school\u00a0<em><span data-scayt_word=\"shmatte\" data-scaytid=\"68\">shmatte<\/span><\/em>-selling, the\u00a0<span data-scayt_word=\"hardnosed\" data-scaytid=\"69\">hardnosed<\/span>\u00a0negotiations, the pure all-purpose chutzpah \u2014 \u201cI\u2019ve known that woman,\u201d one happily told me, as if welcoming home a long-lost relative, \u201call my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Telling_Her_Own_Story\"><\/span>Telling Her Own Story<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In Baum\u2019s profile, Angelyne does not confirm his extensive reporting. When asked, she says, \u201cI know you want it to be true because you\u2019re Jewish \u2014 and that\u2019s adorable!\u201d She then tells Baum, \u201cI know you love me and don\u2019t want to hurt me,\u201d and adds that she wants to save the story \u201cfor my memoirs; that\u2019s my right for my own financial interest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the memoir has yet to be written,\u00a0<em>Variety\u00a0<\/em>reports that Angelyne is working in collaboration with the show. Originally, she had planned to appear but withdrew due to \u201creasons that remain unclear.\u201d However, she \u201cgranted the series the rights to her life, trademarks, art and punk-pop music catalog, all of which are utilized on the show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Rossum, it was important that Angelyne be involved.
