The tenants lacked the star power or notoriety to earn the building anything close to a Chelsea Hotel or Factory-level reputation, but for those in the know, the address was a diamond in the rough of Manhattan\u2019s tourist and financier-filled southern tip.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a really uniquely magical building. You wouldn\u2019t think that there would be so many artists in the Financial District, but I guess that\u2019s the benefit of being in such a profoundly uncool neighborhood,\u201d said Crabapple, who\u2019d lived in her approximately 1,000-square-foot unit with her partner, the illustrator Fred Harper, since 2010. \u201cWe were really tight as a building. I feel really lucky to have had that experience. After the building sold in January, for $9.5 million, the new owners allegedly let everyone\u2019s leases run out and served all remaining tenants eviction papers, giving them only the minimum legal warning. <\/p>\n<p>The building\u2019s owners, Diamond Lane LLC, did not return The Post\u2019s request for comment.\u00a0An attorney for the owners didn\u2019t im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely provide comment on their behalf.<\/p>\n<p>At the very least, former residents have their memories.<\/p>\n<p>During the Occupy Wall Street protests in 2011, the building \u2014 which is a block away from Zuccotti Park \u2014 became something of an \u201cunofficial press room\u201d for protestors who\u2019d \u201cdrink my whiskey, use my outlets, take showers after they got out of jail\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nybooks.com\/daily\/2021\/09\/16\/occupy-memory\/\">Crabapple recalled<\/a>. Later on, there were parties where \u201cwe would have every war journalist and porn star crowded onto the fire escape, smoking cigarettes till dawn.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll always miss it,\u201d former resident <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/crystalthompsonart.com\/\">Crystal Thompson<\/a> told The Post. \u201cI just think I\u2019m the luckiest person to have been in that building. A German model at one point started a thriving skincare line out of her loft, and the brocade wallpaper in Crabapple\u2019s bathroom became something of a meme, with a fan once creating an entire Tumblr account dedicated to it. During the pandemic, residents sent cocktails up and down the elevator to each other. Through her window, a photographer filmed the second tower coming down on 9-11, and the subsequent cloud of ash that enveloped the neighborhood.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s been anything like it. We had art coming from different apartments \u2014 this floor that floor \u2014 it was about how they combined,\u201d said Thompson of their home\u2019s special dynamic. \u201cWe were a bunch of artists in downtown Manhattan, which is kind of no-man\u2019s land, but we had big space and it was super DIY. I don\u2019t think if we lived in another kind of building I could\u2019ve become the artist that I did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One resident who was \u201ctoo stressed\u201d and sad to speak to The Post, had been living in the building since soon after 9\/11. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think of all of us, it was the worst for him. It was his home for a really long time, and I think he had an extraordinarily good price,\u201d said Kristin Rose, a former small-business owner who lived in the building from 2015 until late 2020. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was hard to leave,\u201d she added. \u201cIf we could\u2019ve we would\u2019ve stayed there indefinitely.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the eviction was a crushing blow to the remaining residents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had just been through COVID together, we felt like \u2018It\u2019s all good, we\u2019re gonna make it,\u2019 and then it ended up being a 90-day thing,\u201d said Thompson. \u201cIt\u2019s really not much time when you\u2019ve been somewhere so long.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-slideshow\" data-component=\"inlineSlideshow\">\n<div for 20 years\u2019 and then in three months you have to pack up your life and go \u2019cause a speculator thinks he can squeeze more money out of the building,\u201d said Crabapple. \u201cThis sort of thing shouldn\u2019t be normal. It\u2019s pure greed and it\u2019s displacing people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rose is concerned that the building, which isn\u2019t landmarked, will soon be demolished.\u00a0(To date, no demolition permit exists, according to city Department of Buildings records.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was an extraordinary place, and it\u2019s sad that it\u2019s being lost to whatever,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s legitimately a great loss to the city, cause it\u2019s an interesting part of early American architecture.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think this is just the story of NYC.
