He really was like the Madonna of comedy,\u201d Apatow said. \u201cHe was in a comedy team [<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fMYaQAPpjpk\">Burns and Carlin<\/a>, with Jack Burns], then he was a very \u2018safe\u2019 and clean comedian, then he became a \u2018hippy\u2019 comedian and then a wordsmith and then a very dark, philosopher\/prophet comedian at end of his career. He was always trying to stay current and relevant and was able to pull that off \u2014 and his work got stronger and stronger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of the documentary is about meeting his wife, Brenda in 1960 when he was working in a club and they got married very quickly and then had a baby [Kelly] very quickly,\u201d he said. \u201cHe was on the road and he was broke and Brenda was home watching Kelly, and through their situation and their times, she wasn\u2019t able to pursue her dreams and she became an alcoholic \u2014 and George became a cocaine addict. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir house was very toxic, and a lot of the story is about how they overcame that and found each other again later in life \u2014 but there\u2019s a harrowing love story at the center of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"824\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/george-carlin-early-days-1.jpg?w=824\" alt=\"George Carlin performing on stage in the 1970s.
