\n \u201cBatwoman\u201d star Ruby Rose has opened up about why she left the show after just one season.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she said that a back injury on set last year did factor into her shocking decision \u2014 but she also inferred there was more behind the move.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing the lead of a superhero show is tough. [Laughs] Being the lead in anything is tough,\u201d Rose said. \u201cBut I think, in that particular instance, it was a lot more difficult because I was still recovering from my surgery. I had my surgery, and then 10 days later I went to work, which maybe wasn\u2019t the best idea.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rose herniated two discs while doing stunts, causing her \u201cchronic pain\u201d and led to \u201cemergency surgery\u201d to fix the problem.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost people take about a month or three off before they return to work, so it was definitely made more difficult by that,\u201d Rose, 34, continued. \u201cBut as far as being a lead of a show or a film \u2014 regardless if it\u2019s action or if it\u2019s emotional \u2014 in whichever ways it\u2019s taxing.\u201d<\/p>\n

After she left the show, sources suggested Rose\u2019s departure was not entirely her choice, calling it \u201ca breakup.\u201d Rose stayed primarily mum on the controversy since then, only saying that it \u201cwasn\u2019t an easy decision, but those who know, know.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, Rose told EW that her exit \u201cwasn\u2019t so much [the injury], especially because after we wrapp<\/a>ed up we didn\u2019t get to finish the real finale because of COVID,\u201d and she suggested that \u201cisolation\u201d during the coronavirus crisis led to self-reflection about whether to stay.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, you have time in quarantine and sort of isolation to just think about a lot of different things and what you want to achieve in life and what you want to do,\u201d she said. \u201cI think for both [me and the producers], it was a great opportunity to have a dialogue about a lot of things. I respect them so much, and they\u2019ve been so respectful to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said that she \u201cloved\u201d working on the show and was \u201cso grateful that we got to achieve everything that we did, and I\u2019m proud of everyone that worked on it. I\u2019m proud of myself for working under sort of interesting circumstances, you know, with the recovery and all. I would definitely do [TV] again. I just think that it was also time for me to take a break to fully heal and then return.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rose added that she was \u201chonored\u201d to portray an LGBTQ version of the character for the first time on TV.<\/p>\n

In July, the CW announced that actress Javicia Leslie, 33, was signed to don Batwoman\u2019s cape and cowl as a new character on the show, Ryan Wilder.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am extremely proud to be the first black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show, which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ community,\u201d Leslie said.<\/p>\n
