We\u2019ll explain why it\u2019s useful and how it works.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Is_Touch_ID\"><\/span>What Is Touch ID?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Touch ID is a biometric security feature that scans a user\u2019s fingerprint to allow logins, purchases, and more. It\u2019s useful because it allows device owners to verify their identities without having to repeatedly enter PINs or passwords. Your Touch ID fingerprint information is encrypted locally in a \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/HT204587\">Secure Enclave<\/a>\u201d and is not accessible by Apple or other companies.<\/p>\n<p>Apple first introduced Touch ID on the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IPhone_5S\">iPhone 5S<\/a> in 2013. In 2014, Apple added Touch ID to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IPad_Air_2\">iPad Air 2<\/a>, and it came to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MacBook_Pro#Fourth_generation_(Touch_Bar)\">MacBook Pro (Fourth Generation)<\/a> in 2016, appearing beside the Touch Bar. In 2021, Apple began selling a standalone Magic Keyboard with Touch ID for M1 Macs. Since the iPhone X in 2017, most new models of iPhone use Face ID instead of Touch ID for biometric security.<\/p>\n<p>To set up Touch ID on iPhone or iPad, open the Settings app and navigate to \u201cTouch ID &amp; Passcode,\u201d enter your passcode, and add a fingerprint. On the same Settings page, you can choose which features Touch ID works with, including unlocking your device, Apple Pay, and more.
