But there\u2019s something perhaps just as consequential: scams, hacks, fraudulent exchanges, dumps and the like. Why? Every attack leaves a scar. And the scars are mounting fast.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.chainalysis.com\/reports\/2022-crypto-crime-report-introduction\/\">study<\/a> by Chainalysis<em>,<\/em> scammers got away with $14 billion worth of crypto in 2021, which represents hundreds of thousands \u2014 maybe millions \u2014 of victims in a community where every negative experience has a voice in an echo chamber.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2022-05\/8e432b93-54df-4c95-a0ce-c7dd2cc0567e.png\"><\/figure>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Today_very_few_are_immune_to_scams_and_attacks\"><\/span>Today, very few are immune to scams and attacks<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The urgency for reigning in the dark web is rooted in behavioral economics: loss aversion. For most in the mainstream, once they lose a \u201csignificant\u201d amount of money to a scam or hack, there\u2019s a good chance they\u2019ll be done with the whole asset class \u2014 if not forever, for a very long time. The specter of loss drowns the potential for gain.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2022-05\/e920e883-b3d7-43a4-b1ef-fd5a41fcac12.png\"><\/figure>\n<p>And, unfortunately, the likelihood today of virtually <strong>every<\/strong><em> <\/em>crypto trader and\/or user being victimized is quite high. (Even Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, was the victim of a scam, which is described in the book <em>The Cryptopians.<\/em>) The bad guys are simply that good.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example one.<\/strong> You read on your <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reddit<\/a> that your favorite token is doing an airdrop. You\u2019ve heard about others receiving these \u201cfree gifts of money,\u201d so you jump on the link and are taken to a page where you see what looks like a live trade book. \u201cFor every token you send us, up to 500, we\u2019ll send you back two as your reward,\u201d it says. And there\u2019s a timer indicating just 30 minutes left in the event; you better rush to get your tokens. So you do. What you soon learn is that the Reddit channel where you learned about the \u201coffer\u201d wasn\u2019t official; the airdrop was a scam; the timer continuously restarted itself; and you just sent your tokens to a total stranger.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example two. <\/strong>You type in the URL \u201ccoinbase.pro.com\u201d and are presented with a screen saying your account has been compromised \u2014 and given a number to call. The person on the other side asks for your date of birth, email address and account information so that they can reset your username and password. You start to grow suspicious but are feeling pressured. So, you provide what they\u2019ve asked for, while a knot in your gut senses that you provided way too much information than you should have. Before long, coins are missing from your account. The proper URL it turns out was \u201cpro.coinbase.com.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><strong>Example three. <\/strong>You\u2019re new to the space and feel like you\u2019ve missed out on the coins that have been \u201covernight sensations\u201d and made so many people so much money. So, when you see the opportunity to invest in SQUID Coin \u2014 which will become part of a pay-to-play online <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> based on <em>Squid Game<\/em>, the popular Netflix <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a>, you jump on it. Two weeks later, however, you learn that the developers \u2014 whose names are nowhere to be found \u2014 have abandoned the project and cleverly set an exit trap called an \u201canti-dumping mechanism.\u201d Your coins are worthless. You\u2019ve just had the rug pulled out from under you.<\/p>\n<p>Now imagine these actual scams, and thousands of others, being repeated over and over and over again \u2014 24\/7. <\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Related: <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>4 clever crypto scams to beware \u2014 Dubai OTC trader Amin Rad<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"With_each_passing_day_momentum_and_enthusiasm_are_compromised\"><\/span>With each passing day, momentum and enthusiasm are compromised<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Against that constant, devious drumbeat, high-profile attacks further accentuate doubts: Axie Infinity\u2019s $650-million Ronin Bridge hack, Beanstalk Farms\u2019 $182-million flash loan attack, and Crypto.com\u2019s $33-million hack of user wallets, for example. (These have all h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ened just this year.)<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2022-05\/48206c2d-af4c-493b-b3fc-db9323f06585.png\"><\/figure>\n<p>Before long, a lawless narrative dominates. Meanwhile, ongoing mainstream adoption brings along with it even more nefarious opportunities as \u201cnewbies\u201d \u2014 who simply aren\u2019t paying attention to best practices in safeguarding their funds \u2014 are further victimized. Millions of would-be participants are now watching on the sidelines and preaching \u201cI told you so\u201d to the newest victims.<\/p>\n<p>Which leads me to my central proposition: an urgent need to go on the offensive. A marketing offensive.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, the quest for innovative new safeguards and security features is warranted and welcomed. But it\u2019s not enough. <\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Related: <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>In defense of crypto: Why digital currencies deserve a better reputation<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s needed now is a Manhattan Project, a Marshall Plan, or any other analogy you can think of that means galvanizing massive resources quickly and producing a viable solution to a problem. Because let\u2019s face it, revolutions in tech can be bumpy; it\u2019s going to get a lot worse before it gets better. <\/p>\n<p>Crypto needs a rallying cry, a manifesto, and an educated public to ensure that its awesome potential is realized. In short, get in front of the narrative, lead the discussion, empower safe adoption, and help the crypto community\u2019s newest participants grow hand-in-hand with its creators. Crypto needs a member-funded, coordinated campaign.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Introducing_the_Crypto_With_Confidence_Project\"><\/span>Introducing the Crypto With Confidence Project<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Here\u2019s what I propose: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The top 25 projects by market capitalization, the top 10 centralized exchanges, the top five prime brokers, the top three global trade associations and other stakeholders band together to create a foundation, a decentralized autonomous organization, or other entity in which category consumer education is all it does to ensure that people can Crypto With Confidence. (Treat \u201ccrypto\u201d like a verb? Why not.)<\/li>\n<li>Members of the group, which provide funding and marketplace leadership, are promoted as \u201csponsors\u201d of the ensuing campaigns, which help them to assert their commitment to security and advocate their brands. It also projects unity. <\/li>\n<li>Job 1: Create the equivalent of public service announcements and \u201chow to\u201d content to help consumers be more vigilant about the threats they face. Nestled somewhere between \u201cYou can do it!\u201d and \u201cWatch out!\u201d \u2014 with \u201cIsn\u2019t new <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> awesome!\u201d wedged in between \u2014 the idea is to groom and educate an activist public in thwarting crypto crime and provide the calm and confidence to enthusiastically participate in crypto and Web3.<\/li>\n<li>Job 1a: Create a mnemonic such as PARK that can be used universally. For example: \u201cBefore you put a transaction into motion, shift into PARK \u2014 Pause, Assess, Request, Keep.\u201d <strong>Pause<\/strong> to ask the question(s), <em>Is it too good to be true? Is it unusual?<\/em> <strong>Assess<\/strong> the company, project and\/or people you\u2019re engaging with. Do you know them? Do they know you? Have you done your homework? <strong>Request <\/strong>information, ask questions, and make sure you\u2019re behaving responsibly. <strong>Keep<\/strong> your private keys safe and share them with nobody other than those you\u2019re okay with having access to your funds.<em> <\/em>There are, of course, many ways to approach this.<\/li>\n<li>Now, to set the right tone and ensure it succeeds, it\u2019s critical to make the effort \u201centertaining.\u201d Really entertaining \u2014 so that I can\u2019t avoid paying attention, so that a sense of seriousness is communicated without it being turn-me-off serious, so<em> <\/em>that it\u2019s clear that something which is destined for mainstream adoption is acting in a very mainstream manner. Think Marvel characters defeating punk scammers or a rotating cast of A-list actors playing the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto. And this can\u2019t be a one-and-done kind of thing. It needs to kick off big then become a continuous campaign.<\/li>\n<li>Incorporate marketing best practices: create a curriculum of content, including a course that concludes with certification; drive continuous engagement via <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>letters, Discord or Telegram channels, email journeys, etc.; reward them<em> <\/em>for taking the time to become smarter and more vigilant with \u2014 you got it \u2014 crypto.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Think of it: not only will the Crypto With Confidence Project accelerate best practices in safety and security, it\u2019ll help mitigate a central argument of regulators; consumers and investors can\u2019t protect themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Look, Web3 is still in its infancy. The perceptions, attitudes and behaviors that are forged today are likely to have material impact for decades to come. If venture capitalists can raise billions to fund new projects and protocols, the community can certainly come together to make a massive statement about how it is collectively looking out for the welfare and best interests of the people it hopes to engage.<\/p>\n<p>So, let\u2019s go.
