curbing price gouging amid the baby formula shortage. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe nationwide infant formula shortage has caused unimaginable pain and anxiety for families across New York \u2014 and we must act with urgency,\u201d said Adams in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis emergency executive order will help us to crack down on any retailer looking to capitalize on this crisis by jacking up prices on this essential good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emergency Executive Order 98 allows the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection to prevent price hikes for certain household products under<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www1.nyc.gov\/assets\/dca\/downloads\/pdf\/about\/Emergency-Rule-Adoption-Price-Gouging.pdf\">\u00a05-42 of Title 6 of the Rules of the City of New York<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Former Mayor Bill de Blasio enacted the measure on March 15, 2020 at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic\u00a0when stores began to increase prices\u00a0for hand sanitizer and shortage is hurting parents and families across our city at a time when we\u2019re all still reeling from the crisis of [the] past two years,\u201d\u00a0Anne Williams-Isom, deputy mayor for Health and Human Services, said in the news release sent Sunday afternoon. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis executive order will ensure all of our agencies can use every tool in their toolkit to get infant formula to those who need it and make sure our youngest New Yorkers stay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shelves have remained bare at stores nationwide \u2014 a crisis caused by\u00a0a February recall by supplier Abbott Nutrition of retailers,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/datasembly.com\/news\/out-of-stock-rate-in-april-2022-copy\/\">according to Datasembly<\/a>, a company that tracks retail pricing and sales.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday,\u00a0President Biden agreed to invoke the Defense Production Act\u00a0to ensure that US baby formula producers can obtain the material they need and launched a new US government airlift of formula from abroad.
