Included in the gallery was a picture of the\u00a0former president.<\/p>\n<p>After <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> of the worksheet circulated, the school canceled classes on Thursday because of alleged threats. They also offered counseling and said in a statement: \u201cOn behalf of Roeper School\u2019s leadership, we want to acknowledge the disturbing racial offense contained in an assignment with an upper school class last week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe choice to use this piece of curriculum was completely inconsistent with our School\u2019s philosophy and mission and we sincerely apologize for its use and the harm it has caused,\u201d the school continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile the teacher has taken responsibility and admits the mistake of not properly vetting the resource, we know that is not enough and she has been placed on administrative leave until further notice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carolyn Lett, who serves as the director of diversity at the $30,000-per-year school, told\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fox2detroit.com\/news\/roeper-diversity-director-digusted-with-worksheet-comparing-president-obama-to-monkeys\">local news outlet WJBK-TV<\/a>\u00a0that the worksheet made her feel \u201cdisgusted\u201d and that \u201cshe couldn\u2019t believe it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I first saw it, I\u2019m trying to make sense of it myself,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Lett said the teacher claimed she was \u201chorrified\u201d by the worksheet and did not notice Obama\u2019s portrait among the animals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is made all the more challenging for us because it is the antithesis of who we are as a school,\u201d said Clay Thomas, chair of Roeper Board of Trustees, according to local\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fox2detroit.com\/news\/roeper-diversity-director-digusted-with-worksheet-comparing-president-obama-to-monkeys\">Fox 2<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In May 2021, the school board of trustees adopted an\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/roeper.myschoolapp.com\/ftpimages\/1006\/download\/download_7427156.pdf\">anti-racism resolution<\/a>\u00a0that claimed \u201congoing <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> justice issues across our country, including the killings of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), have had a profound impact on our past and present students, faculty, staff, administrators, trustees, and families at The Roeper School.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the resolutions adopted by the board at the time is \u201cthat we believe Black lives matter,\u201d and that \u201cwe condemn all forms of bullying, microaggressions, hate speech, and violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Roeper School is the oldest school for gifted kids in the United States, according to its website, and prides itself on educating students from diverse ethnicities, races and socio-economic backgrounds.
