It was half of his savings, but since he couldn\u2019t afford a 10% down payment on a home in Westchester, he hoped his gamble on the blockchain would expedite the process after seeing friends cash in crypto to buy real estate. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew it was a risk, but I saw so many people making money fast off crypto and thought it would be a good idea to invest,\u201d Jensen, now 30, told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>Jensen, who lives in Washington Heights and works in digital advertising, allocated $15,000 of his initial investment to the cryptocurrency Cardano when the coin price was nearing $2. He watched its value rise: \u201cIt went to $3 and I almost doubled [my investment]. Then the value stayed at $2 for a few months. Average young investors like Jensen went all in on crypto in the hopes of quickly making bank, cashing out and buying a home, car or business \u2014 or even retire. It all came crashing down in this month\u2019s crypto-market bloodbath \u2014 losing nearly $2 trillion in value \u2014 with some investors losing everything.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>As of press time, a Cardano share was going for 55 cents, making Jensen\u2019s investment worth about $3,000. And he\u2019s saddled with debt because he borrowed $5,000 against his credit card to invest in more Cardano before the market crashed.\u00a0Now, a return on his investments seems like a lifetime away. <\/p>\n<p>Jensen was left having to explain the market loss to his longtime partner, as well as park his plan of buying a car this summer. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t sleep for a couple of days,\u201d Jensen said of watching the price plummet on  Cardano and Ethereum this month. \u201cI\u2019d wake up with insane anxiety,\u201d he added, noting that he felt \u201cdepressed\u201d by the dismal downward turn of both currencies. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd inflation is making cars and homes even more expensive and even harder to get,\u201d said Jensen, who has lost a total of $15,000. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only do I not have profits from Cardano,\u00a0but I also have more credit card debt,\u201d he said, adding that he\u2019ll have to put his home buying on pause until he can pay off his debt.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/220523_Yang_NYP_Features___Crypto_Trading_3.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Steve Jensen, 30, invested $25,000 in 2020 into crypto coins like cardano and ethereum, now his money is worth $3,000 after the crash.\" class=\"wp-image-22379646\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/220523_Yang_NYP_Features___Crypto_Trading_3.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/220523_Yang_NYP_Features___Crypto_Trading_3.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/220523_Yang_NYP_Features___Crypto_Trading_3.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Jensen invested $25,000 in 2020 into crypto coins like cardano and ethereum, now his money is worth $3,000 after the crash. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Stephen Yang<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Still, Jensen does see one silver lining: \u201cYou\u2019d be at my funeral if I invested in Luna,\u201d he said, referring the cryptocurrency that lost more than 99% of its value. <\/p>\n<p>Some investors were left devastated by the Luna collapse. \u201cMy friend and ex-colleague \u2026 tried to commit suicide this morning,\u201d one <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/terraluna\/comments\/un40h4\/my_excolleague_attempted_suicide\/\">Reddit user posted<\/a> earlier this month. \u201cHe basically moved all of his savings to crypto in 2021 and LUNA was a massive player in his portfolio.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Another despondent <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/terraluna\/comments\/urd4o2\/i_retired_at_20_years_old_with_46_million_usd_and\/\">Reddit user<\/a> said he retired at 20, having made $4.6 million trading off an initial $15,000 investment \u2014 only to dump \u201call but $10K\u201d back into the crypto exchange. <\/p>\n<p>\u201c$4,600,000 into $500 in the matter of weeks,\u201d the former millionaire wrote. \u201cI\u2019m not sure if or how i\u2019ll recover. I lost everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chris Panteli, 35, planned on using his crypto earnings to help pivot to remote-only work. Rachel Siegel, 29, a former substitute teacher who became a crypto millionaire, started investing in 2017 with just $25 a week. The crypto influencer from the Lower East Side, who says her investments have resulted in profits in the low seven figures (she declined to give an exact amount), didn\u2019t get crushed in the crypto crash, but she did lose out on Luna. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had $3,000 turn to less than a penny,\u201d Siegel told The Post. \u201cI know people who had millions of dollars turn into $2,000.
