It was a type of transit patrol done in years past \u2014 notably by our mayor when he was a transit cop,\u201d Wilcox said. \u201cIt was an idea that we felt we needed to return to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fifty-four percent of subway crime occurs on trains, the chief said \u2014 and 40% of those in-train crimes occur during evening and overnight hours.<\/p>\n<p>Subway crime rates have soared since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic \u2014 from 1.47 felonies per million riders in 2019 to 2.11 felonies per million riders in April 2022, according to the latest NYPD and MTA figures.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/nypd-night-patrols-250.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"NYPD chief of transit Jason Wilcox speaking at the queens subway homicide.
