Today, we\u2019re watching a breakdown of what expressionistic sound design sounds like in Matt Reeves\u2019 \u2018The Batman.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p>When film fans think of \u201cexpressionism,\u201d a very specific visual style im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely comes to mind. We\u2019re talking stark lighting, long shadows, jagged mise-en-sc\u00e8ne, and absurd angles. This is, of course, a very\u00a0<em>specific\u00a0<\/em>flavor of expressionism: German Expressionism, to be exact. The pre-war cinematic movement is primarily identified by its striking visuals: from the psychologically troubling doubling of 1913\u2019s\u00a0<strong><em>The Student of Prague<\/em><\/strong> to warped gravity and jutting, distorted rooftops of Fritz Lang\u2019s <em><strong>The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari<\/strong> <\/em>(1920).<\/p>\n<p>Bred out of Germany\u2019s relative creative isolation in the lead-up to World War I, German Expressionism is a specific instance of a larger movement that plays fast and loose with a broad artistic idea: to externally manifest internal psychological states. While expressionism\u2019s definition isn\u2019t explicitly confined to visuals, mutated skylines and theatrical lighting are often what we talk about when we identify the cinematic movement in the wild. Even when speaking about German Expressionism\u2019s progeny (for instance, the films of Alfred Hitchcock, Brian DePalma, and Tim Burton), we tend to do so in visual terms.<\/p>\n<p>The video essay below is a good reminder that sound design can also be a tool of expressionistic filmmaking. Using 2022\u2019s\u00a0<strong><em>The Batman\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>as an example, the essayist unpacks how the sound design and sound mix model the film\u2019s soundscapes around the subjective experience of the characters. After all, when you are intently focusing on something, doesn\u2019t the ticking clock fade into the background?
