Just over the weekend, there was <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/tesla-owner-breaks-window-escape-234747672.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">news in Canada<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a Tesla Model Y 2021 driver who had to break a window to escape after his car shut down and caught fire unexpectedly. Incidents range from exploding roadside mopeds to ebike batteries that catch fire while charging at home, to fires burning on cargo ships holding electric vehicles. I\u2019ve watched video footage, and m<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ed a timeline of the fires over the last 18 months with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1eFbWzFno1CFrGoiWE6tPeWCql-VGnPAVXVHAmcbEcJQ\/edit?usp=sharing\">a corresponding spreadsheet<\/a> of the news articles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wanted to better understand the problem, so I\u2019ve spoken to battery scientists, engineers, and experts. I\u2019ve also interviewed several companies that offer a range of solutions to prevent fires from starting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But before we dig into why they occur, let\u2019s understand the problem better.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_extent_of_the_problem\"><\/span><strong>The extent of the problem<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/u\/0\/embed?mid=1HwYu0CoVtd26SMg0sLbWvkUiASDV2lVF&amp;ehbc=2E312F\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve mapped almost 100 incidents of escooter, ebike, and emoped fires from January 2021 to May 2022. Just a point of clarity, in India emopeds are referred to as scooters, but I\u2019ve tried to categorize these correctly as much as possible. I have not included EVs purely for the sake of brevity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_bad_are_the_fires\"><\/span>How bad are the fires?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s worth seeing the ferociousness of some of the fires. What\u2019s surprising is how quickly they alight.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Not my video, but passed to me by a former <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LondonFire?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@LondonFire<\/a> colleague. A house fire in East London a couple of weeks ago caused by an e-scooter lithium battery. An investigation found that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some of the cells that make up the Bolt\u2019s pack can have two simultaneous manufacturing defects. Owners were advised to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">harge more frequently and avoid depleting their battery below approximately 70 miles (113 kilometers).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Park outside im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely after charging.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not leave your vehicle charging indoors overnight.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>July 2021: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specialized Bicycle Components <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cpsc.gov\/Recalls\/2021\/Specialized-Bicycle-Components-Recalls-Electric-Mountain-Bike-Battery-Packs-Due-to-Fire-and-Burn-Hazards-Recall-Alert\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recalled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about 2,500 first-generation Turbo Levo and Kenevo electric mountain bike battery packs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>August 2021: <\/b><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/news\/green-cars\/a37130110\/chevy-bolt-second-recall-for-battery-fire-risk\/#:~:text=2017%2D2019%20Bolts%20recalled%20after,manufacturing%20defects%20in%20battery%20cell.&amp;text=Chevrolet%20issues%20a%20second%20recall,EV%20hatches%2C%20citing%20battery%20defects.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GM expanded their battery recall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Bolt models produced to date, adding 2019-2022 model year Chevrolet Bolts to the list of vehicles whose battery modules it plans to replace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>September 2021:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specialized Bicycle Components <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cpsc.gov\/Recalls\/2021\/specialized-bicycle-components-recalls-electric-mountain-bike-battery-packs-due-to-fire\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recalled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about 2,500 1st-generation battery packs due to a fire hazard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>February 2021:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hyundai <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/02\/25\/tech\/hyundai-ev-recall\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recalled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 82,000 electric cars globally to replace their batteries after <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/11\/10\/success\/electric-car-vehicle-battery-fires\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15 reports of fires involving the vehicles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/02\/25\/tech\/hyundai-ev-recall\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to CNN Business, on a per-vehicle basis, the average cost is $11,000, costing Hyundai $900 million.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>May 2021:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hyundai <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/hyundai-recall-engine-fires-390k-vehicles\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recalls more than 390,000 vehicles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the U.S. and Canada for two problems that can cause engine fires. In one recall, owners are being told to park their vehicles outdoors until repairs are made.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>February 2022:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Renault <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoevolution.com\/news\/renault-zoe-battery-pack-recall-affects-733-units-due-to-fire-risk-181468.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">issued a recall f<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or the Renault Zoe battery pack with the news that th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e battery pack \u201cmay stop working properly during the charging cycle or rolling vehicle, causing an internal short circuit.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>April 2022:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Volkswagen Group <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/topcarnews.net\/?#vw-forced-to-recall-118000-phevs-due-to-battery-issues-s75416.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recalled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> around 118,000 plug-in hybrid vehicles worldwide.
