However, it doesn\u2019t seem like a great solution.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reviewgeek.com\/103437\/hell-freezes-over-apple-announces-a-self-service-repair-program\/\">Apple revealed<\/a> in November 2021 that it would launch a \u2018Self Service Repair\u2019 program in early 2022, providing repair instructions and official parts to anyone who wants to fix their iPhone, iPad, or Mac at home. Apple has been criticized over the years for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ifixit.com\/News\/35840\/apples-independent-repair-program-still-needs-fixing\">limiting access to official repair parts<\/a>, making it difficult for both customers and unauthorized repair shops to fix Apple products. Sounds great, right?<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps unsurprisingly, given Apple\u2019s history with difficult repairs, the Self Service Repair is not an easy experience. Sean Hollister at <em>The Verge<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2022\/5\/21\/23079058\/apple-self-service-iphone-repair-kit-hands-on\">tried a simple battery replacement on his iPhone Mini<\/a>, which involved purchasing a new battery for $69 (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/iphone\/repair\/service\/battery-power\">the same price the Apple Store charges for the whole repair process<\/a>), $49 to rent Apple\u2019s tools for a week, and a $1,200 credit card hold for the toolkit that would be forfeited if the tools weren\u2019t returned within a week. The instructions are designed with these proprietary tools in mind, and the entire toolkit reportedly weighs 79 pounds. Finally, the replacement battery was still registered as an \u201cUnknown Part\u201d until the final step: calling a third-party logistics company and giving them remote access to verify the hardware.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Here\u2019s what I captured. Had to reboot my phone into a diagnostics mode and give them control of some sort. Then it rebooted and they told me I was done <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/YjeIVwqpVw\">pic.twitter.com\/YjeIVwqpVw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Sean Hollister (@StarFire2258) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StarFire2258\/status\/1528115173646471168?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 21, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Brian X. Chen at <em>The New York Times<\/em> had an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/05\/25\/technology\/personaltech\/apple-repair-program-iphone.html\">even more difficult time<\/a> with a battery replacement on an iPhone 12, even after successfully replacing the battery in an older iPhone XS with a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ifixit.com\/Kits\/iPhone-Fix-Kits\/iPhone-Battery-Kits\">$45 iFixit kit<\/a>. He didn\u2019t remove the phone\u2019s security screws before initially removing the screen, causing the original display to shut down after the repair. After <em>also<\/em> replacing the screen with a spare from an independent repair, he had to contact customer support to get the battery recognized as a genuine Apple part.<\/p>\n<p>Repairing most modern electronics is challenging under the best circumstances, so it\u2019s not too unsurprising that the process for fixing an iPhone is tricky. However, Apple is seemingly making self-service repairs more difficult by shipping people the same equipment that standard repair shops own. To use a car analogy, that\u2019s like if Toyota sent you an industrial car lift to fix a flat tire.
