The bill was opposed by the Liberals and by the Parti Quebecois, who\u00a0held back on announcing how they would vote until the last minute.\u00a0The vote was 78 for, 29 opposed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Concerned: Justin Trudeau<\/strong> has concerns about the bill but doesn\u2019t say what he will do about it, the <em>Globe<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-politics-briefing-trudeau-government-has-concerns-with-bill-96-quebecs\/?utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Andrew Coyne<\/strong> had <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/opinion\/article-how-we-respond-to-bill-96-is-who-we-are\/\">a good column<\/a> about the bill in Friday\u2019s <em>Globe<\/em>, pointing out questionable measures.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A doctor, for example, would not be permitted, even in the privacy of her own office, to speak with her patient in English \u2013 or Mandarin, or any other language \u2013 even if that were the preferred language of both parties. The only exceptions: members of the province\u2019s \u201chistoric\u201d English-speaking minority, as defined under existing law \u2013 that is, those who attended English school in Canada; and immigrants of less than six months\u2019 residency.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Recalling centaur:<\/strong> In <em>la Presse<\/em> on Tuesday, <strong>Yves Boisvert<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lapresse.ca\/actualites\/chroniques\/2022-05-24\/a-quand-un-discours-du-centaur-de-francois-legault.php\">writes about<\/a>\u00a0<strong>Lucien Bouchard\u2019s<\/strong> 1996 \u201ccentaur speech,\u201d in which he sketched out a view of Quebec society that reassured its anglo minority, and wonders when <strong>Fran\u00e7ois Legault<\/strong> will deliver a similar message. (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www-lapresse-ca.translate.goog\/actualites\/chroniques\/2022-05-24\/a-quand-un-discours-du-centaur-de-francois-legault.php?_x_tr_sl=auto&amp;_x_tr_tl=en&amp;_x_tr_hl=en-US&amp;_x_tr_pto=wapp\">translation<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>On the other hand:<\/strong> In <em>le Journal de Montr\u00e9al<\/em>,\u00a0<strong>Mathieu Bock-C\u00f4t\u00e9<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.journaldemontreal.com\/2022\/05\/24\/le-projet-de-loi-96-rate-la-cible\">laments<\/a> that Legault didn\u2019t have the courage to go farther, and expresses withering disdain for those with misgivings about the law (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www-journaldemontreal-com.translate.goog\/2022\/05\/24\/le-projet-de-loi-96-rate-la-cible?_x_tr_sl=fr&amp;_x_tr_tl=en&amp;_x_tr_hl=en-US&amp;_x_tr_pto=wapp\">translation<\/a>).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The insane reaction of the Anglophone community to Bill 96 shows us how many of them in its ranks no longer even want to pretend to respect the principle of French Quebec. They equate this with ethnolinguistic supremacy. It\u2019s odious. The reaction of part of the French-speaking elite to the 96 project also shows us that it has the intellectual consistency of dead wood.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Airport delays:<\/strong> A group representing global airlines called Tuesday for the Canadian government to drop the remaining COVID-19 <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> rules to reduce the delays people face at airports, the <em>Globe<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-iata-urges-canadian-officials-to-take-action-to-reduce-delays-at\/\">reports<\/a>. A shortage of the staff has led to delays that leave passengers fuming.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Passengers to blame?<\/strong> In the <em>Post<\/em>, <strong>Kelly McParland<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/opinion\/kelly-mcparland-liberals-blame-regular-people-for-the-airport-chaos-their-policies-created\">considers the situation<\/a> and concludes that <strong>Omar\u00a0Alghabra<\/strong> was wrong to blame passengers.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The backlog at Pearson International Airport grew so pronounced that some weary passengers were forced to bed down for the night wherever they could find space. Others spent hours in search of bags that somehow wandered to spots all over the conveyor system. The Greater Toronto Airport Authority, which runs the airport, put much of the responsibility on the airlines and the federal government. The airlines claimed it was Ottawa\u2019s fault, while Ottawa \u2014 well, we already know what Ottawa thinks, thanks to Minister Alghabra.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Fox threat:<\/strong> A task force of intelligence experts says Canada will have to gr<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>le with the growing influence of anti-democratic forces in the United States \u2014 including the threat posed by Fox News, CBC <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/national-security-us-fox-news-threat-report-1.6459660\">reports<\/a>: \u201cThe United States is and will remain our closest ally, but it could also become a source of threat and instability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bad finances:<\/strong> Canadian households are reporting a deterioration of their finances, polling by Nanos Research for Bloomberg News <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bnnbloomberg.ca\/finances-worsening-for-canadians-as-inflation-surges-poll-finds-1.1769914#.Yo0SfSmvffU.twitter\">shows<\/a>. The number of Canadians who say their finances are worse today than a year earlier has reached 41 per cent, the second-highest reading for this question in surveys going back to 2008.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tax cut sought: Pierre Poilievre, <\/strong>who may be aware that people are fretting about their household budgets, is calling on the Liberals to scrap taxes on gasoline for the summer, CBC <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/poilievre-gas-tax-cut-1.6463917?__vfz=medium%3Dsharebar\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Retailers are routinely charging more than $2 a litre in markets like Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Atlantic Canada. In an effort to capitalize on discontent over these higher prices, Poilievre sent a letter to Finance Minister <strong>Chrystia Freeland<\/strong> Tuesday demanding that Ottawa \u201cgive people a break\u201d by eliminating the gas tax, carbon tax and GST on gasoline sales this summer.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Looking good:<\/strong> In the <em>Globe<\/em>, <strong>John Ibbitson<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-ontario-election-small-town-rural-issues\/\">writes that<\/a>\u00a0if \u201csuburban Ontario votes in this election based on concerns over inflation in <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> and gas prices in particular, the vote on June 2 could deliver a second majority government for Mr. Ford.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Changed man:<\/strong> Ford should benefit from <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/political-opinion\/2022\/05\/24\/on-the-campaign-trail-doug-ford-is-a-changed-man-in-changed-times.html\">an admiring profile<\/a>\u00a0on the front page of the Tuesday <em>Star<\/em>, which contrasts with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ConsumerSOS\/status\/1528881375000018947?s=20&amp;t=_MMpJdM-ZCmiyF5dkQjcCg\">a recent Global report<\/a> that pressed the premier on his failure to let the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> know his whereabouts as the campaign nears the finish line.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Friendly contract?<\/strong> CPC ethics critic <strong>James Bezan<\/strong> is asking the federal ethics commissioner to probe what he calls a $17,000 \u201csweetheart\u201d media-training contract International Trade Minister <strong>Mary Ng<\/strong>\u00a0gave to her friend <strong>Amanda Alvaro<\/strong>, Global <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/8863504\/conservatives-ethics-probe-mary-ng-sweetheart-deal\/\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>High hopes:<\/strong> Expectations are high for <strong>Jean Charest<\/strong> going into tonight\u2019s French-language CPC leadership debate, CP <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/pmn\/news-pmn\/canada-news-pmn\/expectations-high-for-jean-charest-in-french-language-conservative-leadership-debate\">reports<\/a>.
