But despite the hyperbole, when I ask about how they are going to achieve their aims \u2013 or indeed if they are already up and running, who they have helped \u2013 the Zoom call often gets really quiet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So when I meet someone who is making the lives of some of the most disadvantaged people in the world a better place, and they\u2019re using tech to do so, I get wildly excited.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                <iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/gpmn9xkc7o?videoFoam=true&amp;autoPlay=true\" title=\"\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" class=\"wistia_embed\" name=\"wistia_embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\" msallowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week I had the pleasure of talking to Michael Schlein, President, and CEO at <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.accion.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accion is a global nonprofit committed to creating a financially inclusive world. As Schlein explained, \u201cWe are dedicated to enabling 3 billion people who are left out of \u2013 or poorly served by \u2013 the financial sector to improve their lives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accion has been around for over 60 years with a legacy in microfinance and fintech impact investing. In other words, they invest in companies and services that provide financial services, especially to those who may have been unbanked, and unable to access microloans, or insurance. Accion offers an abundance of services, including the sponsorship of two venture investment funds in Africa and a think tank on financial inclusion.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Serving_and_uplifting_disadvantaged_communities_with_fintech\"><\/span><strong>Serving and uplifting disadvantaged communities with fintech<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Critically, Schlein explained, the investment companies not only serve disadvantaged and minority communities but represent them at a local level.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is encouraging. <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2021\/02\/women-led-startups-received-just-2-3-of-vc-funding-in-2020\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Harvard Business Review, in 2019, 2.8% of funding went to women-led startups; in 2020, that fell to 2.3%, Crunchbase <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.crunchbase.com\/news\/global-vc-funding-to-female-founders\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">figures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even worse, the 2.8% figure was an all-time high. From these they can make local payments, international remittances, and cash withdrawals at local ATMs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"COVID-19_bought_digitization_of_critical_services_to_the_forefront\"><\/span><strong>COVID-19 bought digitization of critical services to the forefront<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pandemic created a perfect storm for the rapid acceleration of digital transformation. Many companies focused on remote healthcare. But Accion saw the inequality experienced by the poor accessing services, such as business loans and insurance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many mainstream providers are reluctant to serve the poor, making it hard for people to gain financial security. This created an opportunity for fintech startups and investors to make a difference.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fintech_platforms_can_help_small_businesses_pivot\"><\/span>Fintech platforms can help small businesses pivot<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Covid-19 also created the need for new business models. They represent all genders and races and don\u2019t require a university degree or fluent English.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID saw many restaurants limit their seating, creating an opportunity for many trucks to expand their business. But people running food trucks also need to be on top of keeping themselves safe. They also need to position their trucks to suit the stay-at-home audience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, Goodfynd helps customers find food trucks through an app. In turn, the businesses can use the platform to find staff and gain the essential financial knowledge and tools to thrive.
