Today, we\u2019re watching a video essay that seeks to explain how the Indian blockbuster \u2018RRR\u2019 became a crossover hit.&lt;\/em&gt;\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<hr\/>\n<p>There isn\u2019t always one, clear-cut answer for why a film \u201cbreaks through\u201d from one culture to another. Hollywood never, or at the very least rarely, thinks of its own crossover hits; the films that breached cultural boundaries and weaselled their way into a different nation\u2019s cineplexes. Indeed, the discourse, if we want to call it that, of crossover cinema, tends to describe non-American films succeeding (despite the odds!) in Hollywood.<\/p>\n<p>While American cinema-goers have more opportunities than ever before to explore the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a> of other nations. Streaming and the normalization of subtitles (you know, that thing that the rest of the world is very, very used to), have allowed many film lovers to dip their toes across the international pond. There are still lighting-in-a-bottle hits, of course. Bong Joon-ho\u2019s\u00a0<em>Parasite\u00a0<\/em>immediately springs to mind as a recent instance of the phenomenon (=with due respect to other cross-cultural Korean success stories \u2014 <i>Mother<\/i>,\u00a0<em>Train to Busan<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Handmaiden<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>But, as the video essay below is quick to note, while lots of subtitled international films cross over to Western cinemas this rarely seems to h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>en with Indian Cinema. Despite the enormity of its cultural influence on home soil, Indian cinema has never really caught on in Hollywood. That is, until <strong><em>RRR<\/em><\/strong>, the Telugu-language historical epic\/action adventure\/love story about two bros from different sides of the tracks (<strong>N.T. Rama Rao Jr.<\/strong> and <strong>Ram Charan<\/strong>) who join forces to accomplish the same goal: saving a child and thwarting the oppression of their people).<\/p>\n<p>As our own Chief Film Critic Rob Hunter notes in his review, <em>RRR\u00a0<\/em>is the kind of larger than life blockbuster that rarely crosses the path of Western audiences: \u201cHollywood studios wouldn\u2019t dream of attempting even half of what <strong>S.S. Rajamouli<\/strong>\u2018s wildly ambitious twelfth feature knocks out of the park, but that\u2019s part of what makes the film such an overwhelming success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So whether you\u2019ve seen\u00a0<em>RRR\u00a0<\/em>or you\u2019re wondering what all the \u201ccrossover mega-hit\u201d fuss is about, the video essay below is a gallant attempt to contextualize why the film has been such a big hit in the West.
