That\u2019s what this is doing today.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The DOE\u2019s Office of Curriculum and Instruction will develop interdisciplinary lessons for each grade that officials said will highlight Asian American history and culture, and increase engagement among students who would now recognize themselves in the curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>The push will include professional development for teachers integrating the material into their broader school lessons, as well as new resources and books. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrowing up, I didn\u2019t see many people like me in the history books or the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>,\u201d said Mikayla Lin, a sophomore from Stuyvesant High School. \u201cSo for a while, I thought that maybe there\u2019s just nobody notable, but that couldn\u2019t be further from the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/nyc-asian-curiculum-147.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Mayor Adams said the new lessons will help develop &quot;intelligent future leaders of this city and this country.&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-22430432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/nyc-asian-curiculum-147.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/nyc-asian-curiculum-147.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/nyc-asian-curiculum-147.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Mayor Adams said the new lessons will help develop \u201cintelligent future leaders of this city and this country.\u201d<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Matthew McDermott<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The announcement came after a group of Asian American families demanded inclusion in the DOE\u2019s cultural curriculum, saying they had been excluded from recent diversity pushes. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went through a lot of discrimination in schools, and I don\u2019t think our kids should experience that,\u201d Ting Yu, one of the original organizers, told The Post. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we\u2019re still seen as foreigners, that\u2019s not right,\u201d said Yu, who represented Read Nation, a literacy nonprofit with a focus on AAPI outreach.<\/p>\n<p>An <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSeQv87KVmRsqW5-WkPaAG1kp1XLnBlRsd_BqojsrfdREjaNbA\/viewform\">open letter<\/a> with 2,800 signatories last year pointed to a recent surge in anti-Asian hate crimes. John Liu and others have separately introduced legislation requiring <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2021\/s6359\/amendment\/original\">Asian-American history and civics classes in public schools<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With just days left of the legislative session, the bill is currently in committee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no question that there has been a direct correlation between the current onslaught of anti Asian hate and the COVID-19 crisis \u2014 they go hand in hand,\u201d said Liu. \u201cWhy is that?
