Diana DiZoglio, a Democrat from Methuen, was tacked onto a budget bill and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will never be able to change what happened to victims like Elizabeth but at the very least can set the record straight,\u201d DiZoglio said.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, North Andover teacher Carrie LaPierre \u2014 whose students championed the legislation \u2014 praised the youngsters for taking on \u201cthe long-overlooked issue of justice for this wrongly convicted woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"718\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/GettyImages-517388890.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Witch trial in Salem, Massachusetts.\" class=\"wp-image-22426063\"\/><figcaption>Johnson was the last person to be exonerated from the 1692 trials.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Bettmann Archive<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cPassing this legislation will be incredibly impactful on their understanding of how important it is to stand up for people who cannot advocate for themselves and how strong of a voice they actually have,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson is the last accused witch to be cleared, according to Witches of Massachusetts Bay, a group devoted to the history and lore of the 17th-century witch hunts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor 300 years, Elizabeth Johnson Jr. was without a voice, her story lost to the passages of time,\u201d said state Sen. Joan Lovely, of Salem,<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/technology-oddities-science--82cdc2d0240a43e49897ec817a1418e5\">Twenty people from Salem and neighboring towns were killed and hundreds of others accused during a frenzy of Puritan injustice that began in 1692<\/a>, stoked by superstition, fear of disease and strangers, scapegoating and petty jealousies. Nineteen were hanged, and one man was crushed to death by rocks.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson was 22 when she was caught up in the hysteria of the witch trials and sentenced to hang. That never happened: Then-Gov. William Phips threw out her punishment as the magnitude of the gross miscarriages of justice in Salem sank in.<\/p>\n<p>In the more than three centuries that have ensued, dozens of suspects officially were cleared, including Johnson\u2019s own mother, the daughter of a minister whose conviction eventually was reversed.<\/p>\n<p>But for some reason, Johnson\u2019s name wasn\u2019t included in various legislative attempts to set the record straight. Because she wasn\u2019t among those whose convictions were formally set aside, hers still technically stood. Unlike others wrongfully accused, Johnson never had children and thus had no descendants to act on her behalf.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cElizabeth\u2019s story and struggle continue to greatly resonate today,\u201d DiZoglio said. \u201cWhile we\u2019ve come a long way since the horrors of the witch trials, women today still all too often find their rights challenged and concerns dismissed.\u201d\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
