People are really coming out of the woodwork to help,\u201d Claire Matern, the gourmet grocer owner\u2019s daughter and a lifelong store employee, told The Post of the deluge of donations, volunteers and human kindness they\u2019ve been met with since their 814 Union St. storefront was destroyed in a morningtime blaze last Friday, May 20.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe it was an electrical fire,\u201d said Matern, 32, who wasn\u2019t there when the building\u2019s top floor tenants alerted the fire department, whose station is located half a block away. A neighbor who\u2019s a graphic designer offered to make them a sign explaining they had a fire for their now-boarded-up storefront. A nearby wine store sent them a case of wine. \u201cEveryone is like, we\u2019re here to pitch in.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dad can\u2019t walk down the block, everyone\u2019s offering to help. The rest is stuff and is replaceable \u2014 but everything has to be replaced,\u201d Claire Matern, who was 12 when the shop opened and grew up helping out behind the counter, wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a> post about the incident, telling The Post, \u201cThe walls are black. The plate glass window is broken. All the inventory\u2019s been lost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Miraculously, though, the shop\u2019s papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9 mascot, Gideon the Rooster, survived the flames. \u201cWe\u2019ve had a lot of kids ask about him. It\u2019s amazing,\u201d Ted Matern told The Post.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Among those to volunteer assistance last Friday was Daniel Enriquez, a frequent patron and area resident who\u2019d known Ted for years. Two days later, Enriquez, a 48-year-old Goldman Sachs employee, was shot and killed in an allegedly unprovoked attack while riding the subway to Manhattan for brunch.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was a really regular customer,\u201d said Claire Matern. \u201cHe lives like two blocks away. He came by to make sure we were all ok and see what he could do.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While matters of insurance are still being sorted and their most optimistic timeline remains only \u201cas soon as possible,\u201d Claire says that, between their landlord and the community\u2019s support, she feels hopeful Hiller &amp; Moon will reopen, and has reframed the blaze as an opportunity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPark Slope is a village of sorts, and I\u2019m feeling really buoyed and reminded that the neighborhood needs us and wants us,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of forcing us to do upgrades that needed to be done after 20 years.
