\n It\u2019s a one-in-a-mega-million find.<\/p>\n

Taiwanese fishermen caught the attention of the scientific community after catching an elusive megamouth shark, known as Megachasma pelagios, in 2018. Now, that particular specimen is sitting on a giant block of ice at the Smithsonian\u2019s National Museum of Natural History, where it will hopefully shed light on the bizarre, big-headed predator, reported Smithsonian Magazine.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen it comes to sharks, they\u2019re probably one of the most unique and weird-looking species,\u201d said Paul Clerkin, a researcher at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science<\/a> who obtained the specimen in Taiwan. \u201cTheir mouth just keeps opening and their upper jaw closes like a convertible hood.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not only that, but megamouth is the world\u2019s most elusive shark \u2014 having only been sighted around 70 times worldwide since they were first accidentally discovered by the US Navy in 1976, according to CNN.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Obtaining an intact specimen of the filter feeder \u2014 which is the world\u2019s third-largest with its size measuring 17 feet \u2014 is nearly unthinkable. \u201cYou almost never hear about a megamouth being transported to a museum, especially in the United States,\u201d said Clerkin. \u201cAlmost everything that we know about them, we\u2019ve had to learn from dead specimens that are usually preserved.\u201d<\/p>\n

To take advantage of the rare find, Clerkin and other researchers will scramble to gather all the data and samples they can before the specimen decomposes.<\/p>\n

The researchers\u2019 goal is to provide a \u201cbetter idea of megamouth\u2019s life history\u201d as they don\u2019t yet understand \u201ctheir full role in marine ecosystems or how sensitive they are to human-made pressures,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

After the study is finished, the specimen will be preserved with formaldehyde and ethyl alcohol for long-term storage along with more than 6 million other specimens in the museum\u2019s Division of Fishes collections.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne hundred years from now, someone might say, \u2018We want to look at the megamouth,\u2019 and it will be available,\u201d gushed Dr. Lynne Parenti, curator of Indo-Pacific Freshwater and Coastal Fishes at the museum. \u201cEven if we never ever collect one again, we\u2019ll still know that megamouth sharks existed on Earth at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n
