The researchers conducted the study by searching the terms over a 120-day period.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/google-youtube.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"YouTube\" class=\"wp-image-22437213\" width=\"618\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/google-youtube.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1233 1236w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/google-youtube.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=925 927w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/google-youtube.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=618 618w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/google-youtube.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=308 309w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/google-youtube.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\"\/><figcaption>A whopping 98% of Xinjiang searches showed a Chinese government-backed video in the top 10 results, the study said.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cGoogle actively works to combat coordinated influence and censorship operations while also protecting access to information and free expression online,\u201d a Google spokesperson said in a statement to The Post. \u201cThird party research shows that Google Search consistently returns high quality results, especially compared to other search engines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to denying abusing Muslims in Xinjiang, Chinese state media outlets have also aggressively pushed unfounded theories that the coronavirus pandemic originated in a US military lab. Many of these center around a base in Maryland called Fort Detrick that previously hosted the US\u2019 biological weapons program.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>In searches for \u201cFort Detrick\u201d on YouTube, an average of five Chinese state-sponsored videos showed up within the top 10 results, the researchers said. News searches for \u201cUnit 731,\u201d another term related to the theory that the coronavirus leaked from a US lab, are also reportedly full of Chinese state-sponsored results.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Google said that it gives users disclaimers on YouTube with context about sources of information, including telling users when media outlets are sponsored by governments.<\/p>\n<p>While the researchers didn\u2019t examine search results related to Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, they argued that the online reach of Chinese state sources is troubling because they are \u201cchanneling Kremlin talking points to audiences around the world.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft did not respond to a request for comment, but told the Wall Street Journal,\u00a0which\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/china-excels-in-google-rankings-on-xinjiang-and-covid-19-searches-11653645601?mod=tech_lead_pos1\">first reported the study<\/a>,\u00a0that it is reviewing the study and is always seeking to improve.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While Google search and YouTube are blocked in China, Microsoft operates a Chinese version of Bing that censors results at the government\u2019s request.
