Next year the Claudes and Claudettes will be hopping to their feet for a dancing toad on TikTok (more deserving, honestly, than Lars von Trier.)<\/p>\n<p>The trade publications time these performative participation prizes like they\u2019re Olympic runners. \u201c\u2019Elvis\u2019 Stuns Cannes With 12-Minute Standing Ovation,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/film\/news\/elvis-cannes-standing-ovation-1235277199\/\">wrote Variety <\/a>of this week\u2019s Baz Luhrmann premiere. \u201cDavid Cronenberg\u2019s \u2018Crimes of the Future\u2019 Nabs Six-Minute Standing Ovation,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2022\/05\/crimes-of-the-future-cannes-premiere-1235030273\/\">blared Deadline<\/a> of the new film.<\/p>\n<p><em>C\u2019est amusant<\/em>! After all, we are told that the French are the paragon of superior taste. Their Michelin Guide tells us where to spend $400 on sous vide celery. Parisian fashion houses like Yves Saint Laurent and Dior are world leaders in their field. There\u2019s a $30 upcharge on bottles of sparkling wine with the word Champagne stamped on them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So<em> pour quoi<\/em> in 2012 did \u201cThe Paperboy\u201d starring Nicole Kidman, which The Post called \u201can embarrassing waste of celluloid,\u201d get a 16-minute standing ovation from France\u2019s cinema elite? \u201cThe Beaver,\u201d with Mel Gibson and a 62% score on Rotten Tomatoes, a 10-minute love-fest a year earlier? Gaspar Noe\u2019s \u201cLove,\u201d in which the grand finale of a sex act is filmed in 3D, also got 10 minutes of boisterous <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roval in 2015. At the French Open on Friday, the crowd did \u201cthe wave\u201d for several minutes as the ready-to-go players waited and mocked them with laughter.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the 720 seconds of clapping \u201cElvis\u201d got,<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2022\/05\/elvis-review-baz-luhrmann-1234728121\/\"> the reviews were mixed<\/a>. Many critics say the first half is stronger than the second, and that Tom Hanks\u2019 accent and mannerisms as the King\u2019s eccentric manager are wonky. The Times of London gave Cronenberg\u2019s movie about an organ-harvesting performance artist, starring Kristen Stewart, one star.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no equivalent of this in North America. Not every premiere gets a standing-o at Sundance. Hard to leap to your feet in snow boots and a parka. The Toronto International Film Festival, New York Film Festival and Telluride aren\u2019t praise orgies, either. But that\u2019s wishful thinking with Cannes. Those lunatics stood for Lars Von Trier\u2019s \u201cHouse That Jack Built,\u201d a widely loathed 2018 film in which women and children are mutilated. As the audience banged their baguettes together, Variety editor Ramin Setoodeh <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RaminSetoodeh\/status\/996170465684025344\">overheard an appalled moviegoer<\/a> say, \u201cThey\u2019ll clap for anything.\u201d\n                        <\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
