A needle in the arm: <em>Go, you!<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, the ad\u2019s \u201cheadline\u201d shouts: \u201cDon\u2019t be ashamed you are using, be empowered that you are using safely.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But there\u2019s no way to use heroin safely (like there\u2019s no way to drink and drive safely). Especially if you actually pay attention to the numbers on New York City\u2019s overdose deaths.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These are up 78%\u00a0\u2014 78%! \u2014 from pre-pandemic levels, taking 1,233 lives over the first half of 2021 (this year\u2019s numbers will likely be as bad or worse).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s due largely to fentanyl, the deadly synthetic found in some 80% of all heroin the NYPD tested in 2020.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Yes, the ad warns of how dangerous fentanyl is and advises use of fentanyl test s<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>s. But encouraging heroin use \u2014 as this ad does, with its hideous message of addiction <em>positivity<\/em> \u2014 means driving up fentanyl deaths, pure and simple.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Drug overdoses killed 29,000 Americans aged 15-34 in 2020, more than nine times the year\u2019s toll from COVID in that cohort. This is a crisis, caused by identifiable material factors  \u2014 including the joblessness and isolation inflicted by lockdowns in the name of fighting the virus.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not some quirky, gritty feature of urban life we should smilingly shrug at before throwing up our hands, as that ad does.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Remember: City health czar Ashwin Vasan, with literally zero data backing him up, won\u2019t let little kids go to school unmasked. Yet his department <em>winks <\/em>at shooting up, as long as you do it \u201csafely\u201d and without shame.
