He was 87.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe went peacefully and he looked as handsome as ever,\u201d she said by telephone.<\/p>\n<p>Born just two days after Elvis Presley, the Huntsville native friends called \u201cThe Hawk\u201d (He also nicknamed himself \u201cThe King of Rockabilly\u201d and \u201cMr. Dynamo\u201d) was a hell-raiser with a big jaw and a stocky build.<\/p>\n<p>He had minor hits in the 1950s with \u201cMary Lou\u201d and \u201cOdessa\u201d and ran a club in Fayetteville, Arkansas, where acts included such early rock stars as Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Conway Twitty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHawkins is the only man I ever heard who can make a nice sexy song like \u2018My Gal is Red Hot\u2019 sound sordid,\u201d Greil Marcus wrote in his acclaimed book about music and American culture, \u201cMystery Train,\u201d adding that \u201cThe Hawk\u201d was alleged to \u201cknow more back roads, back rooms and backsides than any man from Newark to Mexicali.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hawkins didn\u2019t have the gifts of Presley or Perkins, but he did have ambition and an eye for talent.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/ronnie-hawkins2.jpg?w=683\" alt=\"Ronnie Hawkins\" class=\"wp-image-22458738\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/ronnie-hawkins2.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1366 1366w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/ronnie-hawkins2.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/ronnie-hawkins2.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=683 683w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/ronnie-hawkins2.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=341 341w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\"\/><figcaption>Ronnie Hawkins in Toronto in 2015. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">FilmMagic<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He first performed in Canada in the late \u201950s and realized he would stand out far more in a country where homegrown rock still barely existed. Canadian musicians had often moved to the U.S. to advance their careers, but Hawkins was the rare American to try the reverse.<\/p>\n<p>With drummer and fellow Arkansan Levon Helm, Hawkins put together a Canadian backing group that included guitarist-songwriter Robbie Robertson, keyboardists Garth Hudson and Richard Manuel and bassist Rick Danko. They became the Hawks, educated in the Hawkins school of rock.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the music got a little too far out for Ronnie\u2019s ear,\u201d Robertson told Rolling Stone in 1978, \u201cor he couldn\u2019t tell when to come in singing, he would tell us that nobody but Thelonious Monk could understand what we were playing. But the big thing with him was that he made us rehearse and practice a lot. They hooked up with Bob Dylan in the mid-\u201960s and by the end of the decade were superstars on their own who had renamed themselves the Band.<\/p>\n<p>Hawkins, meanwhile, settled in Peterborough, Ontario, and had a handful of top 40 singles there, including \u201cBluebirds in the Mountain\u201d and \u201cDown in the Alley.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He admittedly didn\u2019t keep up with the latest sounds \u2014 he was horrified the first time he heard Canadian Neil Young \u2014 but in the late 1960s he befriended John Lennon and his wife, Yoko Ono. They stayed with Hawkins and his wife, Wanda, and three children while they were visiting Canada.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt that particular time, I thought I was doin\u2019 them a favor,\u201d he later told the National Post. \u201cI thought the Beatles were an English group that got lucky. I didn\u2019t know a lot about their music. I thought Yoko\u2019s was (silly). To this day, I have never heard a Beatle album. For 10 billion dollars, I couldn\u2019t name one song on \u2018Abbey Road.\u2019 I have never in my life picked up a Beatle album, and listened to it. Never. But John was so powerful. I liked him. He wasn\u2019t one of those hotshots, you know.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"622\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/ronnie-hawkins.jpg?w=622\" alt=\"Ronnie Hawkins\" class=\"wp-image-22458739\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/ronnie-hawkins.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1244 1244w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/ronnie-hawkins.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=932 933w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/ronnie-hawkins.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=622 622w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/ronnie-hawkins.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=311 311w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/ronnie-hawkins.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 622px) 100vw, 622px\"\/><figcaption>Hawkins in 1960.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Redferns<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hawkins also kept in touch with the Band and was among the guests in 1976 for the all-star, farewell concert that was the basis for Martin Scorsese\u2019s documentary \u201cThe Last Waltz.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For a few moments he was back in charge, grinning and strutting under his Stetson hat, calling out \u201cbig time, big time\u201d to his former underlings as they tore through \u201cWho Do You Love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Besides \u201cThe Last Waltz,\u201d Hawkins also <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eared in Dylan\u2019s film \u201cRenaldo and Clara,\u201d the big-budget fiasco \u201cHeaven\u2019s Gate\u201d and \u201cHello Mary Lou.\u201d A 2007 documentary about Hawkins, \u201cAlive and Kickin,\u2019\u201d was narrated by Dan Aykroyd and featured a cameo from another famous Arkansan, Bill Clinton.<\/p>\n<p>Hawkins\u2019 albums included \u201cRonnie Hawkins,\u201d \u201cThe Hawk\u201d and \u201cCan\u2019t Stop Rockin,\u2019\u201d a 2001 release notable for Helm and Robertson appearing on the same song, \u201cBlue Moon in My Sign.\u201d Helm and Robertson were no longer speaking, having fallen out after \u201cThe Last Waltz,\u201d and recorded their contributions in separate studios.<\/p>\n<p>Over time, Hawkins mentored numerous young Canadian musicians who went on to successful careers, including guitarist Pat Travers and future Janis Joplin guitarist John Till.<\/p>\n<p>He received several honorary awards from his adopted country, and, in 2013, was named a member of the Order of Canada for \u201chis contributions to the development of the music industry in Canada, as a rock and roll musician, and for his support of charitable causes.\u201d\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
