Your OS should tell you&#8221;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<div>\n                            The USB-C standard has been long touted as a \u201cone port to rule \u2018em all\u201d solution. Sure, it\u2019s universal in the sense of the shape of the port. But the capabilities of a USB-C port and cable can vary widely.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, I wrote about why it\u2019s so hard to differentiate one USB-C cable from another. Experts I talked to also noted that there are very few visual markers that tell you what a USB-C cable can do \u2014 charging, data transfer, audio, video, or all of them?<\/p>\n<p>                <iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/gpmn9xkc7o?videoFoam=true&amp;autoPlay=true\" title=\"\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" class=\"wistia_embed\" name=\"wistia_embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\" msallowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>We can certainly do better. And software can play a part too. There are times when you plug in a USB-C cable and your device doesn\u2019t work the way it\u2019s supposed to. However, there\u2019s no way to know if the USB cable is the culprit. Chrome OS\u2019s new feature tells us a bit about what could be wrong.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Lack_of_system_level_information\"><\/span>Lack of system level information<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We reached out to Google, Microsoft, and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le to understand if they\u2019re working on similar features for Android, Windows, Mac, and iOS.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft directed me to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/fix-usb-c-problems-in-windows-f4e0e529-74f5-cdae-3194-43743f30eed2#bkmk_improveconnection\">a page that helps you troubleshoot USB-C cable problems<\/a>, but the notification on Windows 10 and Windows 11 is generic, and tells you that there\u2019s \u201csomething\u201d wrong with the USB cable.<\/p>\n<p>Apple and Google didn\u2019t respond to my queries at the time of writing.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/kI6k4EpNZS\">USB-C Power Delivery specifications<\/a> suggest that the system can get information such as the hardware version of the cable, USB version supported by the cable, maximum voltage and currency capacity, and maximum data transfer speed.<\/p>\n<p>The Linux kernel also has provision for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kernel.org\/doc\/html\/latest\/driver-api\/usb\/typec.html\">USB-C class APIs<\/a> to identify different functionality of compatible devices and cables.<\/p>\n<p>These fields can help the operating system display information about a cable\u2019s performance and compatibility with other devices. But there are hardly any such features available at the moment.<\/p>\n<p>Benson Leung, a Google engineer, who has worked on the Chrome OS feature mentioned above, noted in a thread last month that there\u2019s a gap in OS-level messaging about USB-C cables.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">There is a clear education problem, but you should be asking yourself, &#8220;Why doesn&#8217;t my OS tell me what the cable or device I&#8217;ve plugged in is, and tell me about any problems?&#8221; Right now, there are big gaps in all OSes around USB-C messaging to the user.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Benson Leung (@Laughing_Man) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Laughing_Man\/status\/1512839814885765124?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 9, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While USB-IF, the organization maintaining the USB standard, has tried to make cables easily identifiable with logos, many manufacturers don\u2019t display any kind of indicators on packaging or devices.<\/p>\n<p>So it\u2019s hard to know if your spare USB-C cable will support certain data speeds or displays. If OSes could show us information about these cables through pop-ups or apps, it would be easier for us to select cables with certain specifications in a shop or online.
