Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>er \u2014 who\u00a0served as defense secretary and director of national intelligence in the Obama administration, respectively \u2014 warned that several proposed bills to rein in Big Tech could carry unintended consequences.<\/p>\n<p>The antitrust bills aim to force a revamp of the business models of Google and Meta, the parent company to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a> and Instagram, and possibly break them up.<\/p>\n<p>But the open letter claims they could \u201chinder America\u2019s key <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> companies in the fight against cyber and national security risks emanating from Russia\u2019s and China\u2019s growing digital authoritarianism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both Panetta and Clapper <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2020\/10\/19\/hunter-biden-story-russian-disinfo-430276\">previously signed a\u00a0letter<\/a> portraying The Post\u2019s Hunter Biden reporting as likely Russian \u201cdisinformation,\u201d\u00a0claiming that they were \u201cdeeply suspicious that the Russian government played a significant role in this case\u201d and that it could be \u201cRussia trying to influence how Americans vote in this election.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"681\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/GettyImages-956668214.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Leon Panetta, former U.S. secretary of defense, speak during a panel at the Context Leadership Summit in Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S., on Wednesday, May 9, 2018.\" class=\"wp-image-22468080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/GettyImages-956668214.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/GettyImages-956668214.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>In their letter, Clapper and Panetta, above, claimed that the Russian atrocities in Bucha, Ukraine, were evidence that companies such as Google and Meta shouldn\u2019t face greater regulation in the US lest they \u201cenhance our adversaries\u2019 capabilities.\u201d <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Bridget Bennett\/Bloomberg via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Panetta, Clapper and several other ex-national-security officials, including Mike Morell \u2014 who served as acting CIA director under President Barack Obama\u00a0and also signed the Hunter Biden letter \u2014 claimed in last month\u2019s letter that the Russian atrocities in Bucha, Ukraine, were evidence that companies such as\u00a0Google and Meta shouldn\u2019t face greater regulation in the US lest they \u201cenhance our adversaries\u2019 capabilities.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%98Misinformation\"><\/span>\u2018Misinformation\u2019<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Outspoken critics of Big Tech, including\u00a0Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and\u00a0Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.), note that Clapper, Panetta and several other of the letter\u2019s signatories neglected to mention that they\u00a0work for groups funded by tech companies, including Google, Meta and Amazon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese signers are keen to have Big Tech censor so-called misinformation, yet these letters themselves are full of it,\u201d Grassley told The Post. \u201cThey wanted to control the narrative then like they want to control it now: by removing all competition for Big Tech monopolists and censors.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/AP22087714667329.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Senate Judiciary Committee ranking member Sen. Prior to working for Obama, Morell worked for the CIA under President George W. Bush and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2015\/06\/02\/senate-staff-disputes-ex-cia-official-s-defense-of-torture\/\">wrote a book defending<\/a> the use of waterboarding, sleep deprivation and other torture techniques used\u00a0by the\u00a0agency under Bush.<\/p>\n<p>Panetta, Townsend and Morrell also sent a separate antitrust letter that circulated about six months ago.<\/p>\n<p>Buck dismissed the letters as a feeble attempt to clamp down on legislation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s Big Tech\u2019s last gasp at trying to change a few votes,\u201d he said, \u201cand they\u2019re gonna lose.\u201d\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
