In a conversation with Cointelegraph at WEF 2022, United Nations International Computing Centre (UNICC) director Sameer Chauhan explained the \u201cmassive opportunities\u201d he sees in cryptocurrencies.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The United Nations see \u201cmassive opportunities\u201d in cryptocurrency\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oT7Aja0eQtU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>A former traditional finance executive and head of the UNICC since 2018, Chauhan has seen the rise and fall of cryptocurrency markets. He shared that groups such as the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) do not want to \u201cmiss the boat\u201d when it comes to DLTs.<\/p>\n<p>Chauhan explained that cryptocurrencies are neutral technologies:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s a tool. You could use it for good or you could use it for profiting\u2014which is not bad. [&#8230;] In the future, crypto will be a very strong component of how the world interacts and how they transact, making it a more level playing field.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A powerful vehicle in terms of \u201cbridging the digital divide,\u201d or \u201ctransparency,\u201d cryptocurrencies can encourage outcomes the UNICC promotes, he said. The key is the implementation of cryptocurrencies to ensure that they can be \u201cleveraged correctly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Central bank digital currencies, or CBDCs, could be the implementation of distributed ledger technologies on which UNICC settles. To the last question posed in the Davos Ice Hockey Stadium, Chauhan answers, \u201cCBDCs bring the cost down\u201d and are more powerful than fiat, or government-issued, money.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, there is \u201cno one stance\u201d when it comes to UN agencies concerning CBDCs as there are high levels of independence and autonomy among UN agencies. From refugees to food crises to women\u2019s welfare, the UN seeks to resolve these problems\u2014and a CBDC could be a solution:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMaybe if we can find the right model, leverage some kind of CBDC, the interaction with the constituents we are designed to serve could be frictionless\u2014could be smoother, more transparent.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><em>Related:\u00a0ECB president\u2019s anti-crypto comments trigger community responses<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A hot topic at the WEF 2022, some bankers called to pump the brakes of any CBDC rollout as there are still too many unknowns. The payments network SWIFT was brought into question during a CBDC panel discussion at the WEF, where Mastercard CEO Michael Miebach joked that\u00a0SWIFT would not exist in five years&#8217; time.<\/p>\n<p>Whether it&#8217;s a CBDC or a stablecoin with which the UN has already experimented\u00a0while aiding Ukrainian refugees, Chauhan conclude that when it comes to crypto, \u201cfrom where we sit, we see massive opportunities.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><template data-name=\"subscription_form\" data-type=\"law_decoded\"><\/template><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
