Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>rove the so-called PayUp policy, which will affect companies that provide on-demand delivery such as DoorDash Inc.<br \/>\n        DASH,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/222973991\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.51%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       Instacart, Amazon.com Inc.<br \/>\n        AMZN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210331248\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+4.40%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       (Amazon Flex), Uber Technologies Inc.<br \/>\n        UBER,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/211348248\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-1.99%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       (Uber Eats) and others. The measure now goes to Mayor Bruce Harrell, who plans to sign it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       \u201cGig workers deserve a fair shake and a fair wage,\u201d the mayor said in an emailed statement. \u201cWe\u2019re committed to making Seattle an affordable city where workers can thrive.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Seattle City Councilmember Andrew Lewis, who co-sponsored the ordinance with Councilmember Lisa Herbold, said during the council\u2019s discussion before the vote that \u201cthis is the first of measures to right-size the economy\u201d because of the effects of gig work in the past decade.<\/p>\n<p>Besides establishing a formula that is meant to give gig workers the equivalent of Seattle\u2019s minimum wage of $17.27 an hour, the PayUp policy calls for workers to have the ability to reject offers without penalty, and for app-based-platform companies to provide a detailed breakdown of workers\u2019 pay.<\/p>\n<p>Working Washington, which pushed for the ordinance and whose victories have included helping secure a minimum wage for fast-food workers in Seattle, cheered another win Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSub-minimum wages are history!\u201d the group tweeted.<\/p>\n<p>A DoorDash spokeswoman on Tuesday called the just-passed policy \u201cextreme\u201d and said it would raise costs for consumers and could lead to less work for delivery workers. \u201cCity council also refused to study the impact of this proposal, despite widespread constituent concern,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>But Working Washington spokeswoman Sage Wilson said \u201craising pay for the lowest-paid workers is good for the economy. When more people have more money that means more customers for more businesses.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Instacart, Amazon and Uber did not return requests for comment.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>The Seattle measure, which will take effect in 18 months, does not include ride-hailing drivers. In April, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee signed a law that gives some new benefits to Uber and Lyft drivers but does not classify them as employees.
