The pragmatic middle makes more sense \u2014 but will pols heed its message?<\/p>\n<p>During COVID, when everything fell apart, it was the left that first ceded the public sphere to lawlessness. The May 2020 murder of George Floyd by police was horrific \u2014 and public protest (though it violated COVID guidelines) was justified.<\/p>\n<p>But\u00a0<em>riots<\/em>, vandalism, property theft and the wholesale takeover of urban public spaces, from Minneapolis to Seattle \u2014 including New York\u2019s City Hall Park, commandeered by the \u201cDefund\u201d movement \u2014 were not.<\/p>\n<p>The left encouraged violent rampaging. As Nikole Hannah-Jones, creator of the 1619 Project, which argues that America\u2019s main founding principle was slavery,\u00a0put it, \u201cDestroying property, which can be replaced, is not violence.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"702\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/public-order-02.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"looter\" class=\"wp-image-22480355\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/public-order-02.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/public-order-02.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/public-order-02.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Many on the left excused the breakdown in public order. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Then-candidate Joe Biden read the public mood better, saying\u00a0that\u00a0\u201cburning down communities and needless destruction is not\u201d peaceful protest. But from Seattle\u2019s \u201cautonomous zone\u201d to\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SEisl-8EtH4&amp;ab_channel=FoxNews\">excuses<\/a>\u00a0for gang-led smash-and-grab robberies, Democrats failed to quickly reassert basic order.<\/p>\n<p>People with options have thus retreated from the country\u2019s largest cities, by nearly 2% last year \u2014 with San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and Los Angeles\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/big-u-s-cities-lost-more-residents-as-pandemic-stretched-on-11653537661\">leading<\/a>\u00a0the population decline.<\/p>\n<p>If Democrats won\u2019t commit to maintaining public order \u2014 not when it\u2019s easy but when it\u2019s hard \u2014 they play into the hands of the extreme-right, armed-to-the-teeth survivalist crowd. That is,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theweek.com\/politics\/1007392\/republicans-unreasonable-reaction-to-rittenhouse\">the crowd<\/a>\u00a0that sees Kyle Rittenhouse, a minor who illegally obtained an AR-15-style rifle to protect private property and then killed two people in the chaos that ensued, as a hero.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/joe-biden-20.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Joe Biden\" class=\"wp-image-22480410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/joe-biden-20.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/joe-biden-20.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/05\/joe-biden-20.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Then-candidate Joe Biden condemned the rioting and looting. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Indeed, when it comes to who should maintain basic order in public spaces \u2014 the citizenry, by enacting laws and empowering police to carry them out, or armed mobs \u2014 the extreme right is no better.<\/p>\n<p>Guns in civilian hands are not shorthand for law and order. The proliferation of guns, including long guns, in\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/05\/25\/us\/politics\/republicans-campaign-guns.html\">Republican campaign ads<\/a>\u00a0is a poor development.<\/p>\n<p>That so many people increasingly feel the need to be armed represents a\u00a0<em>failure<\/em>\u00a0of law and order. Clark<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This issue will be increasingly relevant to New York if the Supreme Court declares the city\u2019s gun laws unconstitutional. But we don\u2019t have to wait for that to happen to acknowledge that the country\u2019s gun problem is the city\u2019s gun problem.<\/p>\n<p>Save for the new and growing scourge of \u201cghost guns,\u201d every illegal gun that an NYPD officer must risk his life to seize started off as a legal gun somewhere else, as Mayor Eric Adams constantly notes \u2014 stolen, sold or transferred from a supposedly responsible custodian who failed to safeguard a dangerous weapon.<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic Party has moderates. Adams knows that the answer isn\u2019t an armed urban citizenry; he is trying to reassert public law and order.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Most voters agree with middle positions. Voters\u00a0want the criminal-justice system to deter and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/02\/18\/us\/politics\/prosecutors-midterms-crime.html\">prosecute crime<\/a> and thus keep public order.<\/p>\n<p><em>And<\/em>\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/morningconsult.com\/2022\/05\/26\/support-for-gun-control-after-uvalde-shooting\/\">they want<\/a>\u00a0basic restrictions on the firearms that have the most capacity to cause death and destruction within minutes \u2014 and cause so much public fear and anxiety that even more people respond by arming themselves, an escalation of weaponry that has no happy ending.<\/p>\n<p>Where are the Republican moderates? There\u2019s no reason to delay a congressional vote on provisions such as raising the age of semi-automatic long-gun ownership to 21 and no reason not to have a full and fair debate \u2014 and then a vote \u2014 on re-restricting high-capacity and high-velocity weapons and magazines.<\/p>\n<p>No, such provisions won\u2019t solve all problems. They\u2019ll solve\u00a0<em>some<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that so many such weapons are in circulation isn\u2019t a reason to delay; it\u2019s a reason to act quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Yet Rep. Lee Zeldin, the likely Republican nominee for governor, has\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cbs6albany.com\/news\/local\/zeldin-clarifies-stance-on-red-flag-gun-laws-challengers-take-aim-after-leaked-video\">demagogued<\/a>\u00a0even on red-flag laws. As Tom Suozzi, a fellow New York congressman and Democratic candidate for governor, notes, \u201cIt\u2019s that type of . . . posturing that stops us from getting commonsense [national] gun legislation passed like [universal] background checks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>America has big problems. They won\u2019t be solved if both the left and the right give up the notion that the government must maintain a monopoly, albeit an inevitably flawed one, on armed force.
