Kraken CEO Jesse Powell came under fire for his defense of listing the new LUNA, also known as LUNA 2.0, which seeks to bring the original LUNA \u2014 now known as Luna Classic (LUNC) \u2014 and TerraUSD \u2014 now known as TerraUSD Classic (USTC) \u2014\u00a0back from the dead.<\/p>\n<p>Respected names in the crypto industry such as Nic Carter of Castle Ventures spoke out against the decision, while in a separate tweet thread, Powell lashed out at short-seller Jim Chanos, who had built a large short against Coinbase, Kraken\u2019s biggest competitor. <\/p>\n<p>Carter simply tweeted \u201cwhy\u201d to the official Kraken <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> account that announced the listing of the new LUNA. <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Client demand. There\u2019s a weird dynamic with exchanges. Switching cost is low and people tend to want to do everything all in one place for capital efficiency\/synergies\/convenience. Not supporting 1 coin people demand could cost you the entire account. The list grows every month, from Bitcoin (BTC) to Filecoin (FIL) to the second iteration of LUNA, which currently sits 164th on its price index. <\/p>\n<p>The first Terra collapse wiped out circa $50 billion, causing suicide hotlines to be pinned to the Terra subreddit, while legal documents reveal Terraform Labs founder Do Kwon\u00a0liquidated two branches and an entire company days before the crash.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Related: Exchanges back \u2018Terra 2.0 revival plan\u2019 via airdrops, listing, buyback and burning<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The project was then hard-forked and relaunched with little to no recompense for impoverished investors. An airdrop, for example, did not go how the developers intended, as tokens were unevenly distributed. The new LUNA has since slid from highs of almost $20 to less than $8, despite a 90% spike in price driven by a\u00a0Binance airdrop.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2022-06\/c4c2ac45-85fa-4910-ad98-b537f423cdaf.png\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"><figcaption style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Price chart for LUNA showing the Binance pump on May 30. Source: CoinMarketCap<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Powell cites that \u201cclient demand\u201d motivated the listing of LUNA. Rohan Grey, an assistant professor of law at Willamette University, called Powell out on the move,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rohangrey\/status\/1531457205899350016?s=20&amp;t=NAcBT6ORl4aWSHhciRfuyQ\">arguing<\/a> that eBay does not allow fraudsters to remain on the e-commerce platform, so why should crypto exchanges allow Terra a seat at the table? The comment was a quip to Powell\u2019s claim about Kraken:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe\u2019re a marketplace, like eBay. BTC&lt;&gt;BTC traders don\u2019t pay the bills.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Powell has previously shown a decisive side to his operations, recently closing Kraken\u2019s global headquarters because\u00a0\u201cSan Francisco is not safe.\u201d\u00a0However, when it comes to money and Kraken, \u201cWe try to be as asset-agnostic as possible,\u201d he tweeted. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cFiat and most stocks are garbage but where&#8217;s the outrage? Revenue from these other coins pays for all the security, pro-BTC lobbying and marketing.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In a separate Twitter thread, Kraken defended the future of crypto exchanges. In a <em>Crypto Critics Corner<\/em> podcast, Chanos \u2014 an American investment manager \u2014 detailed the short he had built up against Coinbase, America\u2019s largest crypto exchange. For Powell, there will be a \u201cparadigm shift over the next 10 years,\u201d and crypto exchanges will come out as winners.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Legacy &#8220;fees&#8221; are still there, hidden or moved. Crypto brokerage is just one service that is powered by a gigantic stack of infrastructure that replaces like 20 other middlemen and ancillary businesses.
