The pilot project will run from the end of January 2023 until 2026, unless revoked, an effort to treat addiction as a health issue rather than a criminal matter.<\/p>\n<p>Federal Minister of Mental Health and Addictions <strong>Carolyn Bennett<\/strong> and her provincial counterpart <strong>Sheila Malcolmson<\/strong> announced the plan in Vancouver.\u00a0 \u201cFor far too long, this wave of loss has been a reality in British Columbia and across the country,\u201d Bennett said. \u201cToday, we take the first steps in the much needed bold action and significant policy change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Not far enough:<\/strong> Critics who believe in harm reduction policy said Tuesday that 2.5 grams is too low a limit, the <em>Vancouver Sun<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/vancouversun.com\/news\/local-news\/canada-to-make-important-announcement-with-b-c-on-overdose-crisis\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Too far<\/strong>:<strong> Jason Kenney<\/strong> told reporters Tuesday that the policy shift facilitates addiction, the <em>Calgary Herald<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/calgaryherald.com\/news\/local-news\/kenney-criticizes-harm-reduction-while-announcing-new-addiction-recovery-communities\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Seeking shells:<\/strong> Canada is in talks to buy 100,000 artillery shells for Ukraine in a deal that could cost taxpayers several hundred million dollars, the <em>Citizen<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ottawacitizen.com\/news\/national\/defence-watch\/canada-is-in-discussions-to-buy-100000-artillery-shells-for-ukraine\">reports<\/a>. Officials have been talking to counterparts in South Korea, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> outlets there have reported.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Another month:<\/strong> PHAC announced Tuesday that COVID-19 border restrictions will stay for at least another month, CP <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalnewswatch.com\/2022\/05\/31\/pandemic-measures-to-remain-at-border-for-at-least-another-month-phac-announces-2\/#.YpZmiu33Yfm.twitter\">reports<\/a>. The agency made the announcement\u00a0 the day after Parliament voted down a Conservative motion to revert to pre-pandemic rules. Conservative transport critic <strong>Melissa Lantsman<\/strong> objected: \u201cUnfortunately, the NDP-Liberal government continues to cling to outdated and unnecessary protocols that are exacerbating delays.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fixes proposed:<\/strong> Frustrated by delays, Pearson airport chief <strong>Deborah Flint<\/strong> wants Ottawa to streamline the movement of people through the terminals by dropping some of COVID-19 checks, expand the powers of the ArriveCan <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>, increase use of biometrics and use new <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> to scan luggage, the <em>Globe<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-pearson-airport-chief-urges-changes-to-passenger-screening-to-address\/\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mandates gone:<\/strong> Nine months after imposing mandatory vaccine requirements for staff, four of Canada\u2019s Big Five banks have dropped them, the <em>Globe<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/business\/article-bay-street-backs-away-from-vaccine-mandates\/\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Whither the so cons?<\/strong> Will social conservatives vote end up supporting <strong>Pierre Poilievre<\/strong> in the CPC leadership race if their champions drop off the ballot before he does, the Post <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/politics\/mp-says-so-cons-should-rank-pierre-poilievre-as-second-choice-pro-life-groups-disagree\">wonders<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Growing slowing:<\/strong>\u00a0The Bank of Canada is expected to hike rates today, although Statistics Canada data showed the GDP\u00a0grew at just 3.1 per cent in the first quarter, down from 6.6 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2021, CP <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/business\/canadian-gdp-growth-hits-3-1-in-first-quarter-slower-than-expected-1.5925700?cid=sm%3Atrueanthem%3A%7B%7Bcampaignname%7D%7D%3Atwitterpost%E2%80%8B&amp;taid=62962761a3c5480001385f07&amp;utm_campaign=trueAnthem%3A+Trending+Content&amp;utm_medium=trueAnthem&amp;utm_source=twitter\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text ep-1 font-pratt\"><strong>Systemic barriers:<\/strong> A report on the Correctional Service of Canada from the Auditor-<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a> Tuesday finds Indigenous and Black offenders remained in custody longer and at higher levels of security, the <em>Globe<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-scathing-auditor-general-report-finds-indigenous-and-black-offenders\/\">reports<\/a>, a result of\u00a0systemic barriers that persistently disadvantaged certain groups of offenders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Third try:<\/strong> In the <em>Star<\/em>, <strong>Susan Delacourt<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/political-opinion\/2022\/05\/31\/why-justin-trudeaus-handgun-crackdown-has-a-familiar-ring.html\">traces<\/a> the history of Liberal crackdown on handguns, explaining that they only ended up with a freeze after trying two other approaches, neither of which worked.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Goldilocks policy:<\/strong> In the <em>Line<\/em>, <strong>Matt Gurney<\/strong>, a persistent critic of the Liberal approach to gun control, is less charitable, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theline.substack.com\/p\/matt-gurney-trudeaus-goldilocks-moment?s=r\">questioning<\/a> the logic of a handgun policy that allows people to own them, but only if they already have them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Greene\u2019s view:<\/strong> Also critical of the new gun policy is conspiratorial congresswoman <strong>Marjorie Taylor Greene<\/strong>, the <em>Star<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/canada\/2022\/05\/31\/qanon-congresswoman-takes-aim-at-trudeau-for-handgun-control-evokes-castro-conspiracy-theory.html\">reports<\/a>, because she believes it <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepMTG\/status\/1531729704243240960\">opens Canada up to Russian invasion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Louisiana? Fran\u00e7ois Legault<\/strong> is being critiqued by allophones who speak French at work but another language at home, for exaggerating the language crisis brought on by immigration, <em>La Presse<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lapresse.ca\/actualites\/politique\/2022-05-31\/comparaison-avec-la-louisiane\/legault-compare-un-elu-issu-de-l-immigration-qui-parle-francais-a-une-anecdote.php\">reports<\/a>\u00a0(<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www-lapresse-ca.translate.goog\/actualites\/politique\/2022-05-31\/comparaison-avec-la-louisiane\/legault-compare-un-elu-issu-de-l-immigration-qui-parle-francais-a-une-anecdote.php?_x_tr_sl=fr&amp;_x_tr_tl=en&amp;_x_tr_hl=en-US&amp;_x_tr_pto=wapp\">translation<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>At CTV, Tom Mulcair has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/canada\/tom-mulcair-trudeau-is-sleepwalking-us-all-towards-making-quebec-a-de-facto-separate-state-1.5925741\">a blistering column<\/a>\u00a0on Legault, who he says is relying on \u201cethnic nationalism\u201d for his fall re-election plan. He is being met \u201cwith a whimper by <strong>Justin Trudeau<\/strong> and his hapless Attorney General,<strong> David Lametti<\/strong>,\u201d who, Mulcair writes, are \u201chiding under their desks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Under pressure:<\/strong> Both <strong>Andrea Horwath<\/strong> and <strong>Stephen Del Duca<\/strong> are bullish about their prospects as Ontario prepares to vote tomorrow, but the <em>Star<\/em> has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/provincial\/2022\/05\/31\/the-ontario-election-campaign-is-almost-over-are-andrea-horwath-and-steven-del-duca-finished-too.html\">an item<\/a> pondering their futures if <strong>Doug Ford<\/strong> gets another majority, as seems likely.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hard to check: Lex Harvey<\/strong> has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/ontario-election\/2022\/doug-ford-fact-check.html\">an interesting piece<\/a> in the <em>Star<\/em> on the frustrating process of trying to fact-check Ford, which is hard because he says so little of substance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bubble premier:<\/strong> In the <em>Post<\/em>, <strong>John Ivison<\/strong> has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/ontario-election\/john-ivison-doug-fords-peek-a-boo-campaign-keeps-his-rivals-stumbling\">a different take<\/a> on the same phenomenon, describing Ford as \u201cfocused and disciplined,\u201d sticking to his message, which should augur well for him.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Majority?<\/strong> CBC\u2019s <strong>Mike Crawley<\/strong> has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/ontario-election-campaign-dynamics-1.6470750?__vfz=medium%3Dsharebar\">a good election-night primer<\/a>, pointing out that Ford looks bound for a majority; the New Democrats and Liberals see a path to a different outcome, although they mostly are keen on attacking one another.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2014 Stephen Maher<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"under-article-widget-nl\">\n<p class=\"under-article-widget-title\">Looking for more?<\/p>\n<p class=\"under-article-widget-description\">Get the best of <em>Maclean<\/em>&#8216;s sent straight to your inbox.
